Not long after its 18th anniversary, Oracle Linux is back with a new update, labeled 9.5. Java moves from OpenJDK 11 to OpenJDK 17, while .NET 9.0 comes with support for C#13 and F#9. Additionally, GCC Toolset 14 is available via the AppStream repository, not to mention the UEK and RHCK options.

Less than a month ago, Oracle Linux celebrated its 18th anniversary. Compiled from Red Hat Enterprise Linux (RHEL) source code, Oracle Linux launched with version 4.5 on October 26th, 2006. Now, the time has come for the 9.5 update, which arrived roughly six months after Oracle Linux 9.4. Before anything else, it should be mentioned that Oracle Linux 9.5 comes with two kernel options, namely Unbreakable Enterprise Kernel (UEK) Release 7 Update 3, 5.15.0-302.167.6 (x86_64 and aarch64) and Red Hat Compatible Kernel (RHCK), 5.14.0-503.11.1 (for the x86_64 platform).

In addition to the two kernel options above, here are some highlights of Oracle Linux 9.5:

  • Java pushed up from OpenJDK 11 to OpenJDK 17.
  • Support for C#13 and F#9 thanks to the .NET update 9.0.
  • GCC Toolset 14, which includes GCC 14.2.1, binutils 2.41, dwz 0.14, and annobin 12.70.
  • Other development updates: LLVM Toolset 18.1.8, Rust Toolset 1.79, Go Toolset 1.22.5.
  • Security updates: OpenSSL 3.2.2, OpenSSH 8.7p1-43, and SCAP Security Guide 0.1.74.

In addition to the above, Oracle Linux 9.5 also comes with version 323 of Cockpit and Podman 5.2.

The list of Oracle Linux downloadable content is quite generous, including ISO installation images, individual RPM packages, and container images. While providing 100% application binary compatibility with Red Hat Enterprise Linux, Oracle Linux is freely available. However, the commercial Premier Support plan comes with various advantages, such as Oracle Cloud Native Environment, Oracle Linux Automation Manager/Engine, zero-downtime patching with Ksplice, and more.

Although Red Hat Enterprise 9 (alongside Oracle Linux 9) has been around for more than two years already, Red Hat Enterprise Linux 9 Essentials: Learn to Install, Administer and Deploy RHEL 9 Systems remains a book worthy of attention. The Kindle edition is priced at $29.50, and the paperback format has a price tag that reads $31.05.
