openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1 launches with a new migration tool, soft-reboot support, and more
The openSUSE community is back with a new update. This time, the product involved is Leap Micro, which has just been updated to version 6.1. Introduced in 2022, openSUSE Leap Micro is based on SUSE Enterprise Micro and focuses on providing a host OS with a minimal footprint, which can prove extremely useful in data centers, containerization, and virtual machine use.
The list of changes in openSUSE Leap Micro 6.1 includes the following highlights:
- Support for the IBM Power platform (ppc64le), starting with IBM Power9.
- Easier upgrades thanks to the new opensuse-migration-tool.
- Enhanced security for new installations, which no longer allow password-based remote root login.
- Soft-reboot support.
- Memory compressor ZRAM.
- Active Directory integration for environments based on sssd.
- The following features and packages have been removed: busybox, salt-master, and k3s.
Starting with version 6.0, openSUSE Leap Micro comes with a self-install image, a raw image, and a Packages DVD, which can play the offline repository role. Traditional installers are no longer being used, and those getting started should think first about using the self-install image via a USB drive. Installations can also be automated and customized using Ignition, Combustion, or the jeos-firstboot wizard.
