MacBooks with 5G: Apple reportedly experimenting with cellular connectivity for Macs
For portability enthusiasts, an Apple Silicon-based 12-inch MacBook with cellular connectivity has long been the stuff of dreams. Such ultra-compact form factors are no longer a pipe dream, thanks to Apple Silicon's advancements in efficiency and performance at low TDPs. Interestingly, it appears that something very similar might be brewing over at Cupertino.
According to seasoned analyst Mark Gurman's latest Power On newsletter, Apple is playing around with the idea of a Mac with cellular connectivity. It seems improbable, though, that such a device will be made available before 2026 at the earliest. This timing aligns with recent reports that a 5G modem created by Apple is expected to be embrace the iPhone lineup sometime in 2025. Additional leaks have suggested that the iPhone SE 4 will be the custom modem's inaugural host.
Needless to say, the customized modem will eventually be found in other Apple products, probably even Macs in the future. It is very likely that only MacBooks will have cellular connectivity because Mac desktops, being immovable, would not be logical to have such capabilities. However, if cellular connectivity is incorporated into Apple Silicon CPUs as originally anticipated, the entire Mac line might embrace cellular connectivity.
