Hailing from Germany and based on Arch Linux, Bluestar is a distro that comes in three editions (Desktop, Deskpro, and Developer) and has just been updated to version 6.11.3. The list of changes consists mostly of updated packages, as well as a series of tweaks and fixes.

While Arch Linux has been around for more than two decades, Bluestar Linux still has two years until it will eventually reach its 10th anniversary. A German distro that aims to make Arch accessible to anyone, Bluestar is available in three flavors, namely Desktop, Deskpro, and Developer. While it can be installed on a hard drive/SSD, it can also run flawlessly as a live distro with support for persistent storage. The latest release, announced this weekend, is labeled 6.11.3 (the full release name is bslx_6.11.3.1.2024.10.12-x86_64) and focuses on bringing most packages up to date.

Without further ado, these are some of the more important updated packages and the version they got:

  • alsa-lib 1.2.12
  • bind 9.20.2
  • Firefox 131.0.2
  • Thunderbird 128.3.1
  • glibc 2.40
  • gtk 4.16.3
  • LibreOffice 24.8.2
  • mesa 24.2.4
  • perl 5.40.0
  • vim 9.1
  • vlc 3.0.21
  • wayland 1.23.1
  • xorg-server 21.1.13

While those interested can grab the ISO file from SourceForge, it is also worth mentioning that a Bluestar Linux software repository is maintained to provide additional pieces of software as needed. In addition to providing the latest kernel available, this distro also comes with a rich set of apps, depending on the flavor chosen when installing.

Since Bluestar is based on Arch Linux and uses many of its components, such as the Pacman software manager, Shiv Kumar Goyal's a Practical Guide to Arch Linux can come in quite handy. The book is free with Kindle Unlimited or $9.99 to buy in digital format. The paperback version goes for $41, and the hardcover carries a $61 price tag.
