EasyOS 6.4 now available with support for Zig, a new kernel, visual elements, and more
Those who miss Pupply Linux and Quirky, which was based on it, can rejoice once again, as EasyOS has just moved up to version 6.4. Since version 6.2, EasyOS has received two other updates, labeled 6.3 and 6.3.1, but both only came with minor changes. Now, version 6.4 comes with a new recompile in OpenEmbedded, just as 6.2. In addition, it also introduces support for the Zig programming language, which has been around for less than a decade. At the same time, it continues to arrive in three flavors, namely Scarthgap, Daedalus, and QV (Quirky Void). More details about these variations of the EasyOS distro can be found on this page.
Without any further ado, these are the other noticeable changes in EasyOS 6.4:
- Version 6.6.58 kernel was compiled for EasyOS 6.4 Scarthgap.
- MIME handling for KDE apps has been fixed.
- New desktop icon themes were added.
- WEBP images are now supported in mtPaint.
- A new mirror is now available from the Australian education network AARNet.
While the IMG file to download is only 953 MB large, it contains most of the apps required to get started with general computing use. The list of included pieces of code includes Firefox/Chromium, LibreOffice, GIMP, Dia, InkScape, Panner, Grisbi, Osmi, NoteCase, Celluloid, and Audacious. Also, EasyOS comes with powerful system managers such as NetworkManager, EasyContainers, EasyVersionControl, and the exclusive BluePup Bluetooth manager.
Although the original Puppy Linux team is now retired from the project, there are many derivatives currently available. While there aren't any recent books dedicated to this iconic distro, its fans can grab this Puppy Linux T-shirt off Amazon for $18.99 in multiple sizes and colors.
