Powered by an Ubuntu core and sporting a macOS-inspired design, elementary OS has just moved up to version 8. After 13 years of history, this Linux distro has received a new dock optimized for better multitasking and window management, as well as a new Wayland-powered Secure Session feature.

Unleashed upon the Linux world at the end of March 2011, elementary OS is labeled as a "thoughtful, capable, and ethical" operating system that aims to be easy to use above anything else. Sporting an interface directly inspired by macOS, elementary OS is an open-source piece of code that uses Ubuntu as its foundation and is available for download via a pay-what-you-want model, where $0 is a viable option as well. This week, version 8.0 lands with quite a few highlights that cover most areas of the operating system.

Without further ado, these are the most important changes that come with elementary OS 8:

  • A new Secure Session feature driven by Wayland alongside new settings for better control of the system features.
  • In addition to the above, it should be mentioned that the operating system's default is the Classic Session.
  • To improve app access, Flathub is now included out-of-the-box.
  • Operating system updates are now easy to spot and initiate in the System Settings area.
  • AppCenter updates always require a system restart, while System Settings updates don't.
  • Improved multitasking and window management in the system dock.
  • Refined support for visually impaired users.
  • Improved hardware support thanks to the Linux kernel 6.8 and the inclusion of Pipewire.

In addition to the above, it should also be highlighted that elementary OS comes with redesigned pointers, two new wallpapers, a more modern design visible in several apps, such as Fonts, new keyboard shortcuts, and more. Downloads can be initiated from this page, where those not willing/able to support elementary OS financially can input $0 in the Custom field to proceed.

Those interested in a cheap mini PC capable of handling elementary OS and other Linux distros can currently grab the one by BOSGAME with Intel Alder Lake N95 and 8/256 GB, which currently goes for just $135 on Amazon thanks to a 20% discount.
