Only 8 pieces: Grand Seiko launches new ultra-rare Spring Drive-enabled watch

Alongside the SBGZ011, Grand Seiko is adding another new model to its Masterpiece Collection - the SBGD228. This gem-set timepiece is inspired by the brand’s lion emblem. This model uses a 18k rose gold case measuring 44.5 mm in diameter and 14.4 mm in thickness. The design features a wine-red mother-of-pearl dial accented by 267 diamonds and 26 Mozambique garnets. Lug-set diamonds are tapered to resemble claws, which makes the profile look even sharper against the heavy gold exterior.
The watch runs on the Caliber 9R01, a manual-wind Spring Drive movement produced by the Micro Artist Studio in Shiojiri. It utilizes three barrels in series to provide a 192-hour power reserve. To keep the dial clean and symmetric, the power reserve indicator is located on the back bridge and is visible through a sapphire case back. This movement is rated for an accuracy of ±10 seconds per month, or roughly half a second per day.
Construction includes a dual-curved sapphire crystal with internal anti-reflective coating. The case is water-resistant to 10 bar and features a 4,800 A/m magnetic resistance rating. Grand Seiko includes two crocodile leather straps: a standard version and a specialized Kyoto Leather option with a mane-like texture. Only eight pieces will be produced globally, and availability is scheduled for October 2026 at Grand Seiko Boutiques and Salons. As per aBlogtoWatch, the watch is priced at $273,000.
