OnePlus launched its inaugural foldable phone, the OnePlus Open, back in 2023. The company chose not to follow it up with a successor in 2024 and while it's always seemed like the upcoming Oppo Find N5 would be rebadged as the OnePlus Open 2 globally, a new official statement has now put paid to that train of thought.
In a post by the Product Manager of OnePlus's Open division, Vale Gu, the company has confirmed that it has no plans to launch a OnePlus Open 2. Not this year, at least.
At OnePlus, our core strength and passion lie in setting new benchmarks and challenging the status quo across all product categories. With that in mind, we’ve carefully considered the timing and our next steps in foldable devices, and we have made the decision not to release a foldable this year.
Evidently, the OnePlus Open 2 will not be coming this year, leaving expectant fans with the sole option of buying the Oppo Find N5 when it debuts. Fortunately, OnePlus doesn't rule out the release of future foldable phones:
That said, our decision to pause on foldable for this generation does not signify a departure from the category. Oppo’s Find N5 demonstrates remarkable advancements in foldable technology, including the use of cutting-edge new materials and more sophisticated engineering. We remain committed to incorporating these breakthroughs into our future products.
It's unknown why OnePlus has chosen to go this route. By all indications, the OnePlus Open (buy on Amazon) was well-received. Public opinion on the Find N5 has been highly positive as well, and it's likely OnePlus has now missed out on an opportunity to claim significant market share in the foldable segment, by deciding not to launch the Find N5 as the OnePlus Open 2.
