Notebookcheck's Top 10 Convertible Laptops

Sebastian Jentsch (translated by Andreas Osthoff), 07/08/2017

May 2018 update. Here you will find the best convertibles reviewed by Notebookcheck in the last few months. Our list of top models is regularly updated, maintained and commented on and should assist in purchase decisions.

Convertibles, also known as two-in-one or multi-mode PCs, are hybrids that can be used as a tablet or a laptop. There are many different types: docking tablets with a keyboard base, slider solutions over a fixed keyboard unit or clamshell chassis with a 360-degree hinge. The following list contains notebook convertibles and 2-in-1 notebook convertibles, aka conventional notebooks with a special hinge that allows a 360 degree rotation of the display in order to be used in tablet mode. Windows tablets with extra keyboard or convertible notebooks with detachable display can now be found in a separate top 10 list here.

The following table shows an overview over the past 12 months, and contains notebook convertibles reviewed by Notebookcheck that are still available. In case of identical scores newer models are listed first. The table can be filtered by clicking on the headings or by a text filter (for example “matte”).

Editors' Comments

Convertibles combine the advantages of a tablet and a conventional laptop. There are numerous devices following this concept. The most important feature is a bright, and matte display to work without any limitations, even in challenging environments. The general system performance benefits significantly from Intel's modern SoCs, but the rather compact construction of these systems also suffer from thermal issues quite often. Modern Core i CPUs often throttle dramatically after 5 - 20 seconds. We cover this aspects comprehensively in every individual review. SSDs are pretty much standard; they are not just fast, but the modules are also very compact, which means there is more room for the battery.

1st - Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2018

Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2018 is a well-made convertible
Lenovo's ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2018 is a well-made convertible

Thanks to its carbon fiber case the Convertible ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2018 is not just incredibly lightweight but also amazingly robust and rigid. It is immediately recognizable as a member of Lenovo’s ThinkPad series as it ticks all the usual ThinkPad boxes. With two USB 3.2 Gen 2 Type-C ports with support for DisplayPort and Thunderbolt 3 connectivity is also a big plus, and we were positively surprised by the fast UHS-II card reader.

The combination of its convertible design, Dolby Vision HDR, and its connectivity (2x Thunderbolt 3 via USB Type-C) is a unique selling point for the overall very well-made Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2018.

The ThinkPad X1 Yoga scores in many aspects and thus rightly deserves first place in this top 10 list. A convertible’s benefits are flexibility and decent system performance, and the X1 Yoga 2018 offers both, combined with useful accessories.

Despite its high performance, the device has remained comparatively cool, and its extremely bright display allows for working outside. The 512 GB SSD was quite spacious and incredibly fast.

If we would like to see one aspect improved, it would be the X1 Yoga’s high power consumption and accordingly mediocre battery life.

2nd - HP Spectre x360

HP Spectre x360 13 - beauty before performance
HP Spectre x360 13 - beauty before performance

The https://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-HP-Spectre-x360-13-i7-8550U-FHD-SSD-Laptop.280294.0.htmlHP Spectre x360 is a well-made convertible that almost made it to the very top. Case and build quality are state of the art, and the high-contrast display with its near 100% sRGB coverage is a pleasure to look at.

And let us not forget the comfortable keyboard and touchpad, USB 3.0 Type-A and Thunderbolt ports, and a microSD card reader.

The Spectre’s performance does not justify the HP Spectre’s high price. Build quality and its unique design, on the other hand, surely do.

Performance was just mediocre at best due to massive power throttling despite low overall TDP limits. This might make a difference when reading and writing emails or using the web, but power users with demands for long periods of sustained load will most certainly suffer.

Another problem was the comparatively dark, yet shockingly reflective display - a combination that made working with the device harder than we were hoping for.

We have also had the UHD SKU in review. The Spectre x360 13-ae000 (i7-8550U, 4K UHD) offers a significantly shorter battery life (7:04 hours instead of 8:47 hours) and its i7 CPU is already severely limited by the temperature-induced throttling during regular sustained load.

Equipped with a 256 GB SSD, the Spectre x360 13 can be had for around $1,500. A more affordable and better equipped alternative would be Acer’s 13-inch Acer Spin 5 (i7-8550U, FHD, 16 GB RAM, 512 GB SSD). Performance-wise these two were comparable, although we have to add that the Acer lacks a Thunderbolt port. More power and less throttling are available in the Lenovo Yoga 920-13IKB (i7-8550U, FHD) Convertible ReviewLenovo Yoga 920 (not to be found in this top 10 list).

3rd - Dell Latitude 7390

The Dell Latitude 7390 - a professional convertible
The Dell Latitude 7390 - a professional convertible

The Dell Latitude 7390 (here in review) is a premium convertible, which is primarily designed for business users. It combines very good performance figures with the versatility of a convertible. Our test model of the Dell was equipped with the Intel Core i7-8650U, which is currently the fastest ULV-chip from Intel. We were not fully convinced by the performance though, because it is not faster than the Core i7-8550U in multi-core applications.

The Latitude 7390 2-in-1 is a robust and well-designed notebook with very good input devices and a good system performance in general. However, there are some drawbacks, and the price is high as well. A look at the competition is therefore not a bad idea.

You cannot really make any mistakes with the Dell latitude 7390 if you are looking for a convertible. We still want to mention the very glossy screen since it will affect the outdoor usability quite significantly. Still, the Latitude 7390 performed well in our review. The design is always a matter of taste, but we liked it, and the convertible also collects points for the sturdy base unit and very good input devices.

4th - Asus ZenBook Flip S UX370UA

Good looking: Asus ZenBook Flip S UX370UA
Good looking: Asus ZenBook Flip S UX370UA

The ZenBook Flip S UX370 is an attractive and powerful 13-inch convertible by Asus. With just 14 % its Core i5-7200U exhibited minor throttling in our Cinebench R15 multi-thread benchmark loop, and was much better than the Surface Pro 2017 (i5) in this respect (33%).

The Asus ZenBook Flip S UX370UA is a well-made and surprisingly light convertible. Its decent input devices are of particular importance to prolific writers and avid typists.

In addition to its classy design, the ZenBook customers also receive fast Wi-Fi, a very low level of system noise despite the built-in fan, a decent high-contrast display, the Asus Sleeve, and the Asus Active Pen. The device received the Editor’s Choice Award in October 2017.

In this top 10 list of 360 degree convertibles the ZenBook Flip S UX370 seems to be the most affordable product. However, let us not forget the ThinkPad Yoga 370 or the ZenBook Flip UX360UAK that received ratings of 87 and 86 %, respectively, and thus barely missed the top 10 in this category. Both of them are affordable 13-inch notebooks with FHD panel and a 15-W SoC.

5th - Dell XPS 15 9575

Dell XPS 15 9575 - instant XPS classic with convertible features
Dell XPS 15 9575 - instant XPS classic with convertible features

The Dell XPS 15 9575 (here in review) is supposed to expand the regular XPS 15 9560 with the advantages of a convertible. This was a success, because both the quality and the stability are on the familiar high level. Our test model is based on the Intel Core i5-8305G with the discrete AMD Radeon RX Vega M GL/870 graphics card. The combination is convincing and the performance of the AMD Radeon RX Vega M GL/870 is sitting between the GeForce GTX 1050 and GeForce GTX 1050 Ti.

This means our test sample of the Dell XPS 15 9575 is powerful enough for all modern titles, which expands the usage scenarios of the convertible even further.

Dell's new convertible introduces many new features, and almost all of them can convince us. The Kaby Lake-G usually competes with a GTX 1050 as well as a Core i7-7700HQ, but stays cooler compared to the XPS 15 9560. However, the Maglev keyboard leaves mixed impressions and the Toshiba NVMe-SSD is slower than Samsung's PM961. You should also carry a USB-C adapter; a cleaning cloth for the dark surfaces does not hurt, either.

The XPS 15 9575 is not a cheap devices, and you definitely pay a premium for the convertible features compared to conventional multimedia laptops.

6th - Dell XPS 13 9365

Silent: Dell XPS 13 9365 2in1 with Intel Core-Y CPU
Silent: Dell XPS 13 9365 2in1 with Intel Core-Y CPU

Dell’s incredibly popular XPS 13 is available as a 2-in-1 convertible as well. It is ever so slightly slimmer than the regular visually almost identical XPS 13 9360. However, it does feature an Intel Y-class CPU and is thus completely fanless and therefore completely silent. Dell utilizes a conventional 360 degree mechanism which allows for a complete display backflip. At just 1.2 kg (~2.6 lb) the XPS 13 9365 is one of the lightest 2-in-1 laptops available.

At the expense of battery life, the optional QHD+ panel offers an incredibly sharp image.

Equipped with both Thunderbolt 3 and a fast PCIe SSD the XPS 13 is a complete package. The only thing it lacks is the still quite common USB-A port that is also missing on the newer XPS 13 9370. A battery life of up to 7 hours in our Wi-Fi test should suffice most users, although we do have to add that some convertibles offer a significantly better battery life. The main culprit for this drawback is the device’s comparatively small 46-Wh battery.

7th - Lenovo ThinkPad X380 Yoga

True workaholic: Lenovo's Thinkpad X380 Yoga
True workaholic: Lenovo's Thinkpad X380 Yoga

The ThinkPad X380 Yoga is the successor to the ThinkPad Yoga 370. The case has remained unchanged while the internal hardware has been brought up to date. In its fastest SKU, the ThinkPad X380 features an Intel Core i7-8550U - a true quad-core - as well as 16 GB of RAM and a fast PCIe SSD. The FHD IPS display also did very well in our tests. Being a business ThinkPad this convertible can be opened for maintenance. Among others, you can swap out the SSD or clean the fan. RAM, unfortunately, is soldered onto the motherboard.

The Lenovo ThinkPad X380 offers a robust case with decent input devices. Battery life and overall performance were also on a very high level.

Wits its runtime of 8 to 9 hours in our real-life tests (surfing the web, watching a movie) the ThinkPad X380 should easily last a full day on battery. Unfortunately, the X380 is offered with only a 1-year limited warranty. Extensions have to be purchased separately.

8th - Lenovo Yoga 920-13IKB

Versatile: Lenovo Yoga 920-13IKB
Versatile: Lenovo Yoga 920-13IKB

With its unique wrist watch hinges, Lenovo’s consumer flagship Yoga 920-13IKB is sort of the staple of this top 10 list, but its hinges also set it apart from all of its competitors. Its internal hardware - U-series quad-core CPU, PCIe SSD, and Thunderbolt port - is at eye level with modern Ultrabooks or Subnotebooks, although it offers the added benefits of a touchscreen and tablet mode to boot. Even stylus support with up to 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity is included.

Thanks to its high performance, its decent battery life, and its compelling input devices the Lenovo Yoga 920 is a true convertible all-rounder.

The Yoga’s FHD display is okay by and large. However, we should add that its competitors offer higher contrast ratios and higher color accuracies. Where it remains unrivaled is its connectivity: two Thunderbolt 3 ports, one of which can be used for charging, and a single USB Type-A port are otherwise unheard of in this particular category. Too bad Lenovo did forego the card reader entirely.

9th - Lenovo Yoga 720-13IKB

Slim and sleek: Lenovo Yoga 720-13IKB
Slim and sleek: Lenovo Yoga 720-13IKB

Positioned as a more affordable alternative to the Yoga 920 flagship we find Lenovo’s Yoga 720. Available in Silver and Gray it features a more conventional 360 degree hinge in a very slim well-made metal case. Consequently, at just 10 mm (~0.4 in) it is one of the slimmest convertibles available today. Like its bigger brother, the Yoga 920, the Yoga 720 also features a fairly decent FHD display with its unique set of disadvantages, chief among which is the comparatively low PWM frequency that could cause headaches and eye strain for some users.

Lenovo’s Yoga 720-13IKB is an attractive convertible with decent hardware and input devices.

In our review, the Yoga 720 surprised us with its low temperatures, its low system noise, and its battery life of up to 8 hours in our real-world tests. At the same time its i7 CPU offered performance aplenty.

10th - Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga

Entry-level business convertible: Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga
Entry-level business convertible: Lenovo ThinkPad L380 Yoga

The ThinkPad L380 Yoga is an affordable ticket to the world of business-class convertibles. Depending on the hardware, it can be had for as little as $1,000. It looks almost identical to its other ThinkPad brethren, save for the silver model, but is noticeably less rigid and robust. Fortunately, its input devices are as exceptional as expected, and the L380 is very well suited for day to day word processing.

Despite its attractive price the ThinkPad L380 Yoga is a well-made gateway into the world of business convertibles.

Particular attention has been paid to the L380’s emissions. It remains very cool and almost completely quiet most of the time. Nevertheless, it offers high levels of performance thanks to its U-series quad-core CPU and its fast PCIe SSD. RAM can even be upgraded to 32 GB if necessary. Unfortunately, the L380 is also limited to just 12 months of warranty by default, and the display panel utilized PWM at a very low frequency for brightness regulation. Its Wi-Fi performance was also rather poor by and large.
