New smaller Microsoft Surface PC development plans detailed after recent releases

Microsoft has released numerous Surface PCs in the last few months across its business and consumer portfolios. For instance, the Surface Laptop 8 is now available to purchase with up to a Snapdragon X2 Elite processor (curr. $1,699 on Amazon). Not only that, but the company has also revealed the Surface Laptop Ultra and the Surface RTX Spark Dev Box.
Additionally, Microsoft has just updated the smaller Surface Pro 12-inch and Surface Laptop 13-inch with cheaper variants. Moreover, the latter is now available with Intel Panther Lake processors and a 25% brighter display, too. According to Zac Bowden, these three releases will be the extent of Microsoft's smaller Surface PC offering in 2026, though.
Writing on Windows Central, Bowden claims to have received confirmation from sources that Microsoft does not intend to release new Surface Go or Surface Laptop Go devices. Likewise, the company is said to have ceased Surface Laptop Go 3 and Surface Go 4 production. As a result, what is available from retailers will be the final units ever sold.
Reportedly, Microsoft had hoped to release the Surface Go 5, though. Again citing unnamed sources, Bowden adds that the Surface Go 5 would have been launched 'in the last couple of years' powered by a 'low-end Snapdragon chip' of some kind. A lack of enterprise interest allegedly caused Microsoft to pivot to other devices though, ending Surface Go development altogether.
