According to new reports, Apple is expected to end software support for certain iPads and Apple Watches later this year with the release of iPadOS 18 and watchOS 11. By contrast, there should be some good news for those who continue to use older iPhones.

Apple is expected to unveil its next OS updates during this year's World Wide Developers Conference (WWDC 2024), which commences on June 10. Typically, Apple drops support for older devices with the release of a major iOS revision change. For example, Apple decided against offering iOS 17 to the iPhone 8, iPhone 8 Plus and the iPhone X, which all share an A11 Bionic chipset.

Supposedly, this will not be the case with iOS 18. According to MacRumors, reliable sources state that all iPhones that support iOS 17 will be capable of running iOS 18. If this is correct, then it would see the following iPhones receiving an iOS 18 upgrade this autumn:

  • iPhone XR
  • iPhone XS
  • iPhone XS Max
  • iPhone SE (2nd Gen)
  • iPhone SE (3rd Gen)
  • iPhone 11 series
  • iPhone 12 series
  • iPhone 13 series
  • iPhone 14 series
  • iPhone 15 series

Unfortunately, the same may not be true for all currently supported iPads. MacRumors adds that iPadOS 18 will not reach iPads with A10 Fusion and A10X Fusion chipsets. Thus, 6th and 7th generation iPads will be left running iPadOS 17, as will the iPad Pro 10.5 and the iPad Pro 12.9 2nd Gen. Therefore, iPadOS 18 is rumoured to be available across four iPad lines with varying start dates:

  • iPad (2020 and newer)
  • iPad Air (2019 and newer)
  • iPad mini (2019 and newer
  • iPad Pro (2018 and newer)

Meanwhile, Apple is not anticipated to offer watchOS 11 to the Watch Series 4. Nonetheless, this year's watchOS update is tipped to be incremental on the scheme of things. With the Watch Series 4 dropped, this would leave the Watch SE, Watch Ultra and the Watch Series 5 or newer in line for watchOS 11.
