New "The Citizen" limited-edition titanium watches launch with stunning hand-made dials

"The Citizen" AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B are both powered by the same Eco-Drive A060 caliber.
Citizen has announced two new limited editions under "The Citizen" line, and both have hand-made Tosa washi paper dials with annual accuracy of plus or minus five seconds. The AQ4100-65X and AQ4106-00B are due in October at 3,000 and 3,100 dollars.

Citizen has announced two new limited editions under "The Citizen", and both are due in October. The AQ4100-65X is projected at USD 3,000, and the AQ4106-00B at USD 3,100.

Both watches have dials that use Tosa washi paper, which artisans make by hand in Kochi Prefecture. Citizen has been putting washi on The Ciitzen dials since 2017. The paper lets light through to the Eco-Drive movement underneath, so it works as a dial material and not just a decorative one. Each sheet comes out differently; no two dials match.

The two models look quite different, however. The AQ4100-65X gets Tengujoshi, which is ultra-thin, and Citizen has finished it in a dark red. The case and bracelet on that one are Super Titanium with Duratect Platinum. The eagle mark and the second hand are gold-colored, and those accents are exclusive to this reference.

The AQ4106-00B uses Unryushi instead. Long fibres go into the paper during the papermaking process, and they leave swirling cloud-like patterns with gold fibres running through. The case is finished with Duratect Sakura Pink. It comes on a crocodile strap; the tanner is certified by the Leather Working Group.

Caliber A060 powers both. It is a light-powered Eco-Drive, rated at plus or minus five seconds a year. A full charge gets you 18 months in power save mode. There is a perpetual calendar that holds until 28 February 2100, and the date flips instantly at midnight rather than crawling over. Citizen has also fitted impact detection with a lock function, and automatic hand correction if the hands drift.

Only the red-dial AQ4100-65X is listed on Citizen US, for nearly $3,000.
