Modded Nintendo Switch with 8 GB RAM gets pushed to its limits with PC games
It seems Naga isn't done with modded Nintendo Switch tests. The YouTuber previously ran multiple PC games on the gaming handheld, and now, it has been tested with even more demanding titles.
This new test utilizes the same modded Nintendo Switch as before, with 8 GB of RAM, CPU overclocked at 2.6 GHz, and the GPU running at 1.26 GHz. Like the previous test, the handheld is running the games with Box64 and Wine on L4T Ubuntu 18.04 and custom kernel.
In the latest video, Naga shows the modded Switch struggling with Shadow of the Tomb Raider, Baldur's Gate 3, Fallout 4, and Assassin's Creed Unity. The handheld could barely hit the 30 FPS mark on these. This basically shows the limit of this mod, and this level of performance was quite expected as the hardware is very dated now.
On the bright side, on the new test, Naga shows that the handheld running Devil May Cry 5 at over 50 FPS, Spider-Man Shattered Dimensions at over 60 FPS, and Crysis 1 at nearly constant 30 FPS. It's worth noting that you don't really need to mod the handheld to play demanding games on it. The Witcher 3 port for Nintendo Switch is a good example.
But, yes, the mod does open the doors for running more games on Nintendo Switch (curr. $279.99 on Amazon). Hopefully, the case will be different for the successor, and gamers will have access to more AAA titles without any modding.
