Modded Nintendo Switch with Ubuntu runs PC games at up to 60 FPS
A YouTuber named Naga previously showcased how well the Nintendo Switch can perform by overclocking it and installing 8 GB of RAM. Now, the modder has put the gaming handheld to the test by installing Ubuntu on it. Of course, that's not the only change the console has seen on Naga's new video.
The 8 GB RAM mod is also in place, and the modder has overclocked the CPU of the gaming handheld. In the video, the CPU was running at 2.6 GHz and the GPU at 1.26 GHz. Out of the box, the console can get the processor at a maximum of 1.9 GHz.
With the overclock, RAM mod, and Ubuntu installed, Naga ran multiple PC games on the Nintendo Switch (curr. $262.96 on Amazon). Surprisingly, they ran particularly well, with many managing to run at 30 FPS in most scenarios. Some can even run above this frame rate. Devil May Cry is one of those examples.
Worth mentioning that Naga could get the frames at that range by lowering the resolution and keeping the visual settings low. However, given the very old hardware of the Nintendo Switch, getting such a performance out of the gaming handheld is definitely impressive. This mod even allowed Naga to run Fallout New Vegas at 60 FPS in indoor areas.
If you're planning to replicate this mod, it's worth noting that Naga used Box64 and Wine to get these games running. The Ubuntu installed on this modded Nintendo Switch is L4T 18.04, and it has a custom kernel. You can learn more by watching Naga's video that's attached below.
