Valve is reportedly working to integrate the Waydroid Android emulator into Steam. For those unaware, Waydroid is an open-source Android emulator that lets Linux-based systems, such as the Steam Deck, run Android apps through Linux namespaces.
This open-source emulator allows a full-fledged Android system to work within a container, and it can deliver native-like performance. Bradley Lynch, a well-known leaker and SteamVR data miner, has found a SteamDB package containing five apps. Two of them display new artwork that references Waydroid.
Waydroid currently has support for Intel and AMD GPUs, but that wouldn't be a problem for Steam integration, as this integration would likely be for Steam Deck. It has a custom AMD Zen 2 APU with RDNA 2 GPU. If this holds true, users will have an easy way to run more games and apps on the gaming handheld.
SteamDB reveals that Valve has been working on a Steam app with the Waydroid logo since May 30. The last update the database shows is from four days ago, meaning the integration is still being worked on. Bradley Lynch gives additional insight on this in his tweet, which has been attached below for you to check out.
