Steamworks SDK now sports official Android ARM support, as an X/Twitter user spots an Android branch being added to Walkabout Mini Golf VR's Steam version on SteamDB.

Following the announcement of the ARM-powered Steam Frame VR headset and Valve statements confirming Android games coming to Steam for the device, it was only a matter of time before we learned what the first native Frame-compatible Steam game will be — and the answer is Walkabout Mini Golf VR (YouTube video review).

Walkabout, built within the Unity engine, is already available for both (ARM) Android-powered standalone headsets like Meta Quest and PCVR (x86) users via its existing Steam page. The addition of the Android APK to the Steam version was spotted on X/Twitter by @SadlyItsBradley using SteamDB, confirming it will be available for existing owners on Steam Frame day one — since the Android version is now just an additional branch under the same Steam title.

This news, in addition to the completed Steamworks SDK 1.63 release, confirm libraries added for both "linuxarm64" and "androidarm64" to Steam. This means that Android APK files should soon be fully distributable via Steam for Steam Frame, though for now it does seem limited to VR games and SteamOS.

The seamlessness of the system does open the possibility that future multi-platform releases between PC and Android could one day allow Steam buyers to play games across PCs, standalone VR headsets, and even phones, but there are reasons Valve may be looking to avoid that. The biggest one would be treading on the toes of Google, though its loss in court to Epic Games should (on paper) mean that Steam will be fully allowed to distribute games without being delisted from the Play Store. Cross-platform gaming between Android and PC would become more seamless than ever with such a move, though, and it would surely benefit both Valve and developers alike.

Valve's internal testing with the Waydroid Android emulator reported on last year may also suggest the possibility of Android emulation being added to PC Steam, further improving playability and distribution for Android games that may not even have PC ports.
