"Make it thin and light." This is probably what the engineers at MSI heard when being given the task of creating the MSI GF75 8RD. And the result is: thin and light. But how does the flyweight gamer fare under full load? After all, the MSI GF75 is not made for office work. It is directed at the gaming community. Can the thin MSI keep up with the high demands of gaming or might this design have taken its toll on the laptop's abilities?

While the GTX 1650 is an excellent upgrade over the GTX 1050 or GTX 1050 Ti, we can't say the same about the Core i7-9750H over the Core i7-8750H. Be prepared to spend $1200 for a budget gaming laptop with the performance level of an older GTX 1060.
MSI GF75 Thin 9SC-039XES
The MSI GF75 Thin 9SC-039XES is a lightweight and decent performance gaming laptop. It claims to be 16 % thinner, 8 % smaller and 15 % lighter than the average 17-inch gaming laptop in the market. This portable 17-inch gaming laptop is only 22~23.1 mm thin and 2.2 kg light, which is a figure typically seen on a conventional 15.6-inch laptop instead of a 17-inch laptop. For design, the laptop features a metallic top and keyboard cover paired with a futuristic design that's packed for battle. Besides that, it has a drop-down hinge design with ergonomic gaming experience. For the display, users can get a clear view of the game at any angle with brilliant clarity and contrast with the IPS level display and true-to-life visual. The four-sided thin-bezel design and 88 % screen-to-body ratio allow users to enjoy more immersive gameplay in an even more compact chassis. The hardware specification of the laptop includes an Intel Core i7-9750H processor, an NVIDIA GeForce GTX 1050 Max-Q graphics adapter, 16 GB RAM and a 512 GB SSD for storage. The 8th generation processor powers up with 40 % performance gain over the previous generation with the extra cores. GeForce Max-Q is an innovative technology that squeezes all the performance of NVIDIA GeForce GPUs into the world's fastest, quietest slim laptops. These hardware specification allows users to play most of the game titles at high detail. As a gaming laptop, cooling is also one of the highlights and essential features. The MSI GF75 features a fine-tuned thermal design to be noticeably quieter and cooler under load, easily blending into any environment. It has two fans, four heat pipes and four exhausts. Developed under an exclusive partnership with BlueStacks, the MSI APP Player brings seamless gaming experience between mobile games and PC platform and leverages customized features as specific keyboard lighting and better graphics with multi-task works. As for battery life, the MSI GF75 Thin is all juiced up for unplugged productivity and entertainment. It claims to have 7+ hours of battery life according to the MobileMark 2014 standard. Audio has also been given more emphasis with Nahimic 3 and Audio Boost, which enhance in-game 3D surround sound and make finite control over music, movies, and conference calls. They also enhance audio detail by 30 % with the built-in AMP (Audio Power Amplifier) and golden audio jack. As a conclusion, the MSI GF75 Thin 9SC-039XES is definitely a lightweight and high-performance laptop. Light weight, big screen, high performing processor and price tag are looking promising for this model. However, gamers will need to carry the power adapter for a full day out. MSI GF75 Thin 9SC-277XES
The GF series by MSI provides a budget line-up of gaming laptops quite similar to the GL and GP series. Compared to its predecessor, the MSI GF75 Thin has been introduced with a new narrow-bezel chassis design for a noticeably smaller, lighter and more compact gaming experience. Similar to the GF75 Thin 8RD, this laptop also carries a design which is clearly directed at the gamer community. The proof to state that this device does stand as a gaming laptop includes the keys with red lettering, the typical gamer’s ventilation slots and the brushed metal surface. However, there is an equal amount of space below and above the keyboard, which might be a bit uncomfortable for those with large hands, as the wrists might end up resting on the edge of the case for hours. The top of the base unit and the back of the display are made of cool metal, while the sides and bottom of the base unit are made of thin, cheap-looking plastic.
Apart from that, the keys with red lettering also come with red back-lighting. This lighting has three levels of brightness, and there is also an option to turn it off entirely, as it might not be of interest to some users. The keyboard creates a rather comfortable typing experience with only minimal clatter. In addition, the matte black ClickPad gives a good feeling and offers satisfactory gliding properties. However, it should be noted that there is no free space allocated above or below the ClickPad, as the keyboard has been positioned further down than usual. In terms of its display, the GF75 Thin 9SC comes with a 17.3-inch screen, offering a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. This laptop utilizes the same AU Optronics B173HAN04.2 IPS panel as the older GF75 8RD.
The MSI GF75 Thin 9SC has been equipped with an Intel Core i7-9750H, which provides CPU performance that is only marginally better than that of the Core i7-8750H found in the GF75 8RD. While the processor does place this laptop among the higher-end gaming laptops, the GeForce GTX 1650 makes it fall into the budget gaming category. Being Nvidia’s entry-level gaming GPU, the performance is obviously proving the same. There are also no other faster GPU options available for this model. In terms of its connectivity, the GF75 Thin 9SC has a connector for the 135-watt AC adapter, an HDMI port, two Type-A USB-3.1 Gen-1 ports on the left, another single Type-A USB-3.1 Gen-1 port, a single Type-C USB-3.1 Gen-1 port, an Ethernet connector, a Kensington Lock and individual connectors for microphones and speakers on the right side. Overall, this budget gaming laptop is definitely a good choice for gamers out there if it fits their bill.

The 10th gen Core i5-10300H is so similar to both the 9th gen Core i5-9300H and 8th gen Core i5-8300H that it's only worth upgrading if you own a laptop with the Core i5-7300HQ/i7-7700HQ or older. As a budget gaming laptop, the GF75 10SCXR is essentially identical to last year's cheaper GF75 9SC with no performance surprises despite the next-gen CPU.

Also, the notebook lacks an SD card reader, which is petty, but at least it catches up on I/O. Not only that, but you can also upgrade your memory up to 64GB, and for storage, you get one M.2 PCIe/SATA combo slot, and a 2.5″ SATA drive bay. Although, keep in mind that the laptop comes with a seal on one of its screws, so some you might end up voiding your warranty in some regions.

According to MSI the GF75 10SDR-253 might become one of this holiday seasons's best-selling notebooks. You get a six-core CPU, a 144 Hz panel, and a GeForce GTX 1660 Ti for less than $1,200. Naturally, we had to take a closer look at this price-performance champ.
