Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2020 Laptop Review: Business convertible with small improvements

Lenovo has not made any major changes to the ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2020. Here, it is more about evolution than revolution. What this means is that the 2020 model has the same design as the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2019. This is not necessarily a bad thing, because the X1 Yoga 2019 earned a lot of praise in our review. The price has not changed, but the performance should be better, at least according to the specifications sheet.
Our review device retails for 1670 Euros ($1937). For this money, users will get the ThinkPad X1 Yoga with an Intel Core i7-10510U, 16 GB of RAM and a 512 GB SSD. The touchscreen and the Active Pen are also part of the package. This is the price for a special configuration, which Lenovo offers to students and other individuals eligible for Lenovo’s Campus Program. The operating system is not included, though. The regular price for this device amounts to at least 2300 Euros ($2668).

Display - four different panels for the X1 Yoga 2020
At first glance, the display options do not seem to have changed when compared to last year’s model. Nevertheless, the low-power panel in our review device is brighter and offers an improved contrast ratio. Here is a list of all display options:
- FullHD (1920x1080) low-power IPS panel, 400 cd/m², 72% NTSC
- FullHD (1920x1080) IPS panel with a privacy filter, 500 cd/m², 72% NTSC
- QHD (2560x1440) IPS panel, 300 cd/m², 72% NTSC
- UHD 4K (3840x2160), HDR 400 IPS panel, 500 cd/m², 90% DCI-P3
All options feature an anti-reflective coating and a fingerprint-resistant surface.
Our review device has an average brightness of 405 cd/m², which corresponds to the value provided in the specifications sheet. The black value of 0.21 cd/m² is roughly the same when compared to the predecessor model. However, due to a higher display brightness, the contrast ratio is significantly higher (1948:1). The brightness distribution of 95% is so good that the X1 Yoga 2020 takes first place in our companion chart in this area. We observed no clouding or PWM flickering in our review device.

* ... smaller is better
Straight out of the box, the built-in panel exhibits a somewhat elevated DeltaE2000 colour deviation against the sRGB colour space. We observed the best results after calibration, with the DeltaE2000 sitting below the desired value of 3. The response times are the weak point of the X1 Yoga’s display. The competition does not do much better in this area. The IPS panel covers 95% of the sRGB colour space and almost 61% of the AdobeRGB colour space.
The highly reflective screen surface is not conducive to outdoor use. In the shade, there are too many annoying reflections on the screen. Nevertheless, the laptop is still usable due to a high display brightness. However, in direct sunlight, this level of brightness is not sufficient to overcome the reflections.

Performance - Yoga X1 now with Comet Lake
2020’s Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga comes with four different CPUs: Core i5-10210U, Core i5-10310U, Core i7-10510U and Core i7-10610U. All processors feature the Intel UHD Graphics 620. When it comes to RAM, there are two options: 8 GB and 16 GB. The X1 Yoga has a 512 GB SSD in the M.2-2280 form factor. There is a variant with a 1 TB SSD as well.
Processor
The Intel Core i7-10510U is a Comet Lake-based low-TDP CPU. All in all, it offers a disappointing level of performance. The Intel Core i7-10510U performs worse than last year’s Core i7-8565U. The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga is having a hard time keeping up with the rest of the competition and is only able to beat the HP Dragonfly.
In the first benchmark run in our multi-core Cinebench R15 continuous loop, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga scores a good 691 points. After that the results swing up and down and, only after 20 benchmark runs, the CPU reaches a steady state.

Storage Devices
The ThinkPad X1 Yoga features a 512 GB NVMe SSD from Samsung, which scores some major points with its high transfer speeds. The 4K read speed of over 56 MB/s is quite impressive. Thanks to this, the laptop boots up very quickly, because during the boot-up the system has to read a lot of small files. All in all, the storage device performs better than the Western Digital SSD in last year’s model.

Gaming Performance
The iGPU is not capable of running any modern titles. It can achieve playable frame rates in older and non-demanding games, but only on the lowest settings. Nevertheless, it is possible to play the latest games on the ThinkPad X1 Yoga 2020. However, for this, users will need an external GPU, which can be connected to the device via the Thunderbolt 3 port (four PCIe lanes).

Temperature
When idle, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 5 does not become hot. Under load, the surface temperatures rise considerably, peaking at 48.4 °C (119.12 °F). The surface temperatures of our review device are very similar to those of the predecessor model, which is not surprising since both devices have the same chassis. Because there are no areas at which the 50-°C (122 °F) mark is exceeded, working on this device over an extended period of time should be quite comfortable.
In our stress test with FurMark and Prime95, the CPU temperatures rose rapidly initially, because the CPU drew 51 watts. After a few seconds the power draw fell to 15 watts and the CPU frequency dropped to 900 MHz. Subsequently, the temperatures fell from 98 °C (208.4 °F) to an average of 76 °C (168.8 °F).
(±) The maximum temperature on the upper side is 44.1 °C / 111 F, compared to the average of 35.3 °C / 96 F, ranging from 19.6 to 55.7 °C for the class Convertible.
(-) The bottom heats up to a maximum of 48.4 °C / 119 F, compared to the average of 36.7 °C / 98 F
(+) In idle usage, the average temperature for the upper side is 25.3 °C / 78 F, compared to the device average of 30.2 °C / 86 F.
(+) The palmrests and touchpad are reaching skin temperature as a maximum (34.4 °C / 93.9 F) and are therefore not hot.
(-) The average temperature of the palmrest area of similar devices was 28.2 °C / 82.8 F (-6.2 °C / -11.1 F).

Energy Management
Energy Consumption
Despite a low-power display, the power consumption of the ThinkPad X1 Yoga is not better than that of the competition. The Asus ZenBook 15 has a very high power draw, because it has a dedicated GPU. The ThinkPad X1 Yoga is slightly more energy-efficient than the predecessor model. However, the lower power consumption when idle is offset by a high power draw under load. The energy consumption peaks at 67.3 watts, when the CPU is actively turboing. This is not a problem for the 65-watt power adapter.

Battery Life
The battery capacity of 51-Wh is unchanged. We got slightly longer battery runtimes in our reality-oriented Wi-Fi benchmark, which we conducted using the new version of Microsoft Edge. A battery runtime of eleven hours means that the laptop will be able to last for an entire workday. However, the Dell Latitude 7200 offers an even-longer battery runtime. Neither the CPU nor the GPU are throttled down when running on battery power and the battery takes one hour and forty-seven minutes to fully charge.

Verdict - ThinkPad X1 Yoga with slight improvements
The Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 5 is very similar to its predecessor and therefore offers almost the same exact advantages and disadvantages. This is because both devices have the same chassis, which is quite rigid, because it is made of high-quality materials.
The change to the newer Comet Lake CPU provided some improvements. However, the raw CPU performance is somewhat lower, when compared to the predecessor. That being said, the system performance is still very good, thanks in large part to a very fast PCIe SSD.
The new ThinkPad X1 Yoga G5 is only a small update. Lenovo still offers a very good business convertible with a rigid chassis and good system performance. However, upgrading from the predecessor model does not make much sense.
In terms of ports, the ThinkPad X1 Yoga offers everything one might need. Thanks to two Thunderbolt 3 ports, the laptop is quite future-proof. The device is no less future-proof in terms of wireless communication, because it supports the fast Wi-Fi 6 standard. The old weak points are still there, namely the maximum of 16 GB of RAM and the fact that users cannot install an LTE modem post-purchase. The battery lasts long enough for a normal day at the office.
At first glance, the regular price of 2300 Euros ($2668) seems quite high. However, the Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Yoga Gen 5 is primarily intended for business customers, who put a premium on mobility and battery life. As a convertible, the device is very versatile and the Active Pen Pro is also always there. The bright display is quite good, but the highly reflective screen surface can cause some discomfort.
