The Lenovo ThinkBook 14s laptop is worth having and using for just about anything from work to basic stuff to some light video or photo editing. It has a sleek design making it thin and a long battery life but the only problem is the price. The web discount is where it’s really worth your money but without it, you could find something else with similar specs at a lower cost.

As was the case with the ThinkBook 13s, the ThinkBook 14s is a real winner for the price. You can get a heck of a lot for under a thousand dollars, and it's more than the sum of its parts. This is a great PC. There are two big problems though. One is that it doesn't charge with USB Type-C, and that's particularly annoying. The other is that the screen is too dim, so if you're thinking about using it outdoors a lot, it's not for you.

Another disadvantage is the relatively poor touchpad experience and the unevenness in the keyboard feedback. Thankfully, though, the laptop has a fingerprint reader, embedded in the Power On/Off switch. Interestingly enough, the ThinkBook 14 has a 25W L1 Power Limit, which provides quite the headroom for a high frequency, during long time periods. However, the cooling is not really able to cope with it, which results in very high temperatures during full load.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 14 is essentially an IdeaPad model with a couple of essential enterprise features thrown in, such as support for user data encryption and a wide choice of full-size IO ports. CPU and storage performance is in line with what's expected but the same can't be said of its display and touchpad. If you're willing to live with these glaring issues, you consider the Lenovo ThinBook 14 as your machine of choice at your small or medium business.

Lenovo's ThinkBooks are aimed primarily at business users. They lack most of the ThinkPad series' numerous business features but should still perform adequately nevertheless. Find out in our review how well the new subnotebook did, and what its pros and cons are.

As highlighted, the Lenovo ThinkBook 14 (2024) laptop is not a cheap pice of kit at R33 899 (RRP), but for that outlay you’re getting a business laptop that punches well above its weight and feels like of piece of technology that will stand you in good stead for a few years at least. Yes, it has ticked all the boxes needed of a modern laptop, along with making itself genAI ready, but it also remembers to include support for older technology.

The Lenovo ThinkBook 14 Gen 7 is a small machine that performs as a 16-inch business device. This is great news for professionals who travel a lot since the battery life is also long even with the base model with a 45W capacity (~10 hours of videos). When the Core Ultra 5 125U is loaded at max for a long time, you can expect a 3.02 GHz / 2.39 GHz P and E core clock which is a superb result for such a compact device. These frequencies are even higher than the ones of the ThinkBook 16 Gen 7 with the same CPU. In addition to that, the fan isn’t noisy and the keyboard becomes just warm when the processor is doing the heavy lifting. The 60Hz IPS display (LEN140WUXGA (LEN9125)) is good enough for normal office work.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.
In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.
In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.
Modern games should be playable with these graphics cards at low settings and resolutions. Casual gamers may be happy with these cards.
AMD Radeon RX 540X: Polaris based mid-range graphics card with 512 shaders (8 compute units) and a maximum clock speed of 1,219 MHz (according to AMD). Very similar to the older RX 540 with maybe slightly higher clock speeds.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
i7-8565U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.8 and 4.6 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
Intel Core i5:
i5-8265U: Whiskey Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Kaby Lake but produced in a further improved 14nm++ process). The four cores are clocked between 1.6 and 3.9 GHz (Turbo Boost) and support HyperThreading.
Intel Comet Lake:
i7-10510U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced on 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.8 and 4.9 GHz (all 4 cores 4.3 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports DDR4-2666 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default).
i5-10210U: Comet Lake based low power quad-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced in 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 1.6 and 4.2 GHz (all 4 cores 3.9 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (8 threads). The integrated memory controller supports LPDDR4-2933 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default). Compared to the faster i5-10510U, the level 3 cache was reduced from 8 to 6 MB.
i3-10110U: Comet Lake based low power dual-core processor (technically identical to Whiskey Lake and still produced in 14nm++). The CPU cores can clock between 2.1 and 4.1 GHz (all 2 cores 3.7 GHz max.) with HyperThreading (4 threads). The integrated memory controller supports up to LPDDR4-2933 and using cTDP up/down the performance can be adjusted by the OEM (10 - 25 Watt possible, 15W default). The integrated graphics adapter clocks from 300 - 1000 MHz and only offers 23 instead of 24 CUs.
Intel Ice Lake:
i5-1035G4: A low-power, Ice Lake family processor (SoC) featuring 4 cores, 8 threads, 6 MB of L3 cache and the Iris Plus G4 (48 EUs) iGPU. This Core i5 saw the light of day in H2 2019; it is designed for use in highly portable consumer laptops. The CPU cores run at 1.1 GHz to 3.7 GHz. The Sunny Cove microarchitecture that is in use here is notable for several improvements over Skylake including support for new technologies, new instruction sets and fast LPDDR4-3733 RAM. There is no PCIe 4 support here, however.
AMD Lucienne (Zen 2, Ryzen 5000):
R7 5700U: A laptop-grade APU featuring eight SMT-enabled Zen 2 cores running at 1.8 GHz to 4.3 GHz and a Vega series graphics adapter with 8 CUs clocked at up to 1,900 MHz.
R5 5500U: A hexa-core APU designed for use in ultra-thin, upper mid-range laptops. The Ryzen features six Zen 2 CPU cores running at 2.1 GHz to 4.0 GHz alongside the Vega 7 graphics adapter (448 unified shaders running at up to 1,800 MHz). One could be forgiven for thinking Ryzen 5 5500U is a renamed Ryzen 5 4500U - which is not the case. Ryzen 5 5500U is most similar to Ryzen 5 4600U, the most noteworthy difference between the two being the faster iGPU model of the former.
R3 5300U: A mobile quad-core APU with Zen 2 cores clocked at 2.6 to 3.8 GHz and a Vega graphics adapter with 6 CUs clocked at up to 1500 MHz. The Ryzen 3 CPU is very similar to the Ryzen 3 4300U.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.
