Reviews for the Lenovo Legion Go S

68.3% Lenovo Legion Go S gaming handheld review - Steam Deck killer or Windows victim? | Notebookcheck
The Lenovo Legion Go S aims to be the jack-of-all-trades among gaming handhelds. Lenovo currently offers it with Windows and from May, it will also be available with Valve's gaming operating system. However, as a result of its somewhat slow APU and Windows, the handheld didn't do entirely well during our test.

Tony is back with another handheld gaming PC review, but this one might seem familiar ???? The Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS is a true Steam Deck rival and arguably puts Windows 11 handheld to shame thanks to its snappy interface and strong performance.

90% I tested the new Legion Go S — and it’s the Steam Deck killer I’ve been waiting for
Source: Tom's Guide English
I once said I wanted a handheld with the ROG Ally X’s specs that ran on SteamOS. I’m happy to say the Lenovo Legion Go S is literally what I’ve asked for. Unless we see a SteamOS-powered handheld with an AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme chip released this year, I’m confident in saying this will be my favorite handheld of 2025. If you own a Steam Deck and are happy with it, then you don’t need to upgrade to this Legion Go S. Similarly, if SteamOS is too limiting, then you might be better off with a Windows 11 handheld like the first Legion Go S. The Lenovo Legion Go S with SteamOS heralds a brighter future for gaming handhelds and is a fantastic device in its own right. If you’ve considered buying a handheld but didn’t know which one to get, this is the one for you.

60% Lenovo Legion Go S review: Would you like Steam with that?
Source: Gadgetguy English
Wrestling with Windows 11 on a handheld gaming PC is something I’d only recommend for the most patient of gamers. If you can, choose the SteamOS version instead, or install SteamOS on the Windows 11 model for a significantly smoother experience. Alternatively, wait and see how Microsoft plans on improving the Windows gaming experience with its Xbox-themed device later in the year. Because of how close the Legion Go S is to the Steam Deck in terms of performance, wait until a sale brings it below $1,000. Otherwise, its comfortable form factor and big screen are decent enough drawcards when paired with games that make the most of handheld play.

83% Lenovo Go S With SteamOS Is the Steam Deck I'd Buy Today
Source: CNet English
It's unfair to compare a new device with one that's a couple of years old, but Valve's OG Steam Deck and Steam Deck OLED are starting to feel a bit old compared with shiny new devices. As the first of what I hope is a decent-size field of new SteamOS-running hardware, I think Lenovo has gotten a lot of things right that I even found too quirky on Valve's device when I first got it, though. The SteamOS model of the Lenovo Go S does dole out its own share of sadness, especially given the $830 price tag of the top-end model I tested -- the IPS, non-HDR display instead of OLED is my biggest complaint -- but the bigger screen, better controls and device layout compensate a lot.

80% The Lenovo Legion Go S is a big, bright beast that might blow your budget
Source: Pocket Lint English
I actually quite enjoyed my time with the Lenovo Legion Go S, and I do think it is a solid gaming device, comfortable to hold and capable of playing brand-new games with ease on perhaps the best screen I've seen on a handheld. But in a world of increasing competition, it is tough to fully recommend a handheld that only offers its best performance when plugged in, and costs hundreds of dollars more than other portable gaming PCs that feature similar (or sometimes better) specs. However, if you can find a unit on sale (and I did fairly easily while writing this review), the Legion Go S is a perfectly fine handheld for those who are looking to primarily play games on a handheld console in their own home close to an outlet, or who have plenty of portable power banks on hand when out and about.

70% Legion Go S review: Not the budget-friendly gaming handheld you're looking for
Source: Hardware Zone English
In the end, I thought that the Lenovo Legion Go S is a stark reminder of how ambition can be constrained by compromise. In its bid to offer a more affordable entry into the handheld gaming market, Lenovo perhaps cut too deeply by choosing the Ryzen Z2 Go processor and scaling back its design compared to the original Legion Go. Our benchmark numbers speak for themselves: contemporary games will struggle on the Go S, where the ROG Ally X and even the original Legion Go handle them with far greater ease. Its subpar battery life when gaming, sluggish performance, and lack of robust optimisation further distance it from the competition. While it aims to cater to budget-conscious gamers looking for a Windows-based gaming handheld, it simply doesn’t hold up against the stronger, more capable offerings from ASUS and even Lenovo’s own stable.

70% Lenovo Legion Go S Review: High Potential Gaming Handheld Hamstrung By One Feature (For Now)
Source: Slashgear English
There's a lot to love about the Lenovo Legion Go S, and fundamentally it's an excellent piece of hardware, but it's held back by its high price, and perhaps more significantly by Windows 11. I really enjoyed playing games on the Go S; it offers solid performance, and is highly ergonomic (at least for my large hands). Given its large size and price, I would expect a little more oomph in terms of graphical capabilities, but that space seems to be more dedicated to heat dissipation than to boosting performance, which is in some ways a smart tradeoff. Regardless, the good overall gaming experience is countered by any interaction with the system outside of games; however, Windows may be a temporary curse on this device.

60% Lenovo Legion Go S review: A gaming handheld that’s all beauty with little substance
Source: Laptop Mag English
The Lenovo Legion Go S is good at what it aims to be: an entry-level, budget-friendly handheld gaming PC that can deliver solid performance on lower settings. While it’s currently one of the most affordable current-gen handhelds on the market, it does make compromises when it comes to performance. It consistently fell short of the MSI Claw 8 AI+ and the Asus ROG Ally X in our testing. However, the Legion Go S can still deliver a fun gaming experience on Medium or Low graphics, particularly in lightweight titles and indie games. So, the Legion Go S can be a good option for entry-level PC gamers or gamers who are looking for something under $800. With that said, though, you can get a significant bump in performance for only $70 more with the Asus ROG Ally X, so if you have a little bit more money to spend, it would be worth it.

But again, the Steam Deck does efficiency better. Simply limiting frame rate to 25fps and brightness to 40 percent can yield over eight hours of Balatro on the Deck, and I’ve gotten four hours, 42 minutes in Dave the Diver there. With the Legion Go S, my Dave only got 2.5 hours to hunt those sushi ingredients and blow up fake environmentalists! I am comfortable saying no one should buy the Windows version of the Lenovo Legion Go S, which costs $730 at Best Buy. Even if the performance, battery life, and price weren’t disqualifiers, Windows is a stain on this machine. And like other recent Windows handhelds I’ve tested, it does not reliably go to sleep and wake up again: I woke several mornings to find the system hot with fans spinning, even though I’d pressed the power button the previous evening.

50% The Lenovo Legion Go S (with Windows) makes so many mistakes I can't figure out how we got here
Source: Android Authority English
The Windows-powered Legion Go S isn't a total bust from Lenovo. The display is great, and so are the speakers. There are also some nice software features, including fully customizable buttons. However, there are so many confusing choices here that ruin the experience: the quad-core Ryzen Z2 Go chipset leaves much to be desired, the whole thing is too heavy, there's no "gotta have it" feature, and poor hardware decisions (like the tiniest trackpad on Earth) make it cumbersome and mediocre to actually use. When you add in the sky-high asking price, it's hard for me to recommend this to anyone when more powerful and/or more user-friendly options exist for less cash.

Pre-orders for the Lenovo Legion Go S are live at Best Buy. Prices start at $730. I recommend this handheld for people who want a lightweight console with rich audio output. If you prefer something with better performance and superior battery life, I suggest the MSI Claw 8 AI+. While gaming, the Claw 8 lasts twice as long as the Legion Go S -- at 4.5 hours -- although it is more expensive.

89% Lenovo Legion Go S review: A nice gaming handheld, but the SteamOS version is coming too
Source: Techaeris English
Overall, the Lenovo Legion Go S is a very nice Windows gaming handheld. Here’s the bottom line, from my perspective. If your goal is to buy a Windows gaming handheld for Xbox gaming and Steam gaming, the Legion Go S competes with the rest of the pack in this way. It’s a little pricey, but it’s built well and has very nice features and specs, so the value is there. The question you need to ask yourself is. Do you want to find a slightly larger and heavier Legion Go and save some money? Or perhaps wait for the SteamOS version of this? Or just buy a SteamDeck? I can’t tell you what to do. All I can say is; I believe this Lenovo Legion Go S gives you value for the money.

In Tony's Lenovo Legion Go S review, he'll break down everything you need to know about the latest Windows 11 handheld to hit the market. It serves as a more portable version of the Lenovo Legion Go, ditching detachable controllers for a more streamlined ergonomic design. It also features a sharp 8-inch LCD display and decent battery life. While Lenovo Legion Go S has plenty of strong attributes, it’s not perfect. 60% Lenovo Legion Go S review: Not quite the bargain we hoped for
Source: PC World English
The Lenovo Legion Go S is a beautiful piece of hardware. When I picked it up and held it in my hands, touching the controls, I felt like I was going to have a great experience. It feels great to hold — and, when you’re playing a game that uses most of the gaming controls (not that tiny touchpad), it feels awesome to play games on. But then I turned it on and I was faced with the frustration of using Windows on a handheld gaming PC. I found the battery draining much faster than it does on my Steam Deck, but I didn’t notice a huge performance increase over gaming on a Steam Deck. And I remembered this machine costs much more than a Steam Deck. If Lenovo’s hardware was less expensive, it would be compelling.

80% Lenovo Legion Go S review: a frustratingly great gaming handheld
Source: Stuff TV English
Of all the PC gaming handhelds I’ve tried, the Legion Go S comes closest to matching the feeling I got when first picking up a Steam Deck. Lenovo has nailed the shape of the system and the controls are fantastic. The tiny touchpad is my only real ergonomic irk. It has a bright, colourful screen, and using LCD tech instead of OLED is fine with me when it helps keep the price low enough to be a genuine alternative to Valve’s machine. The custom Ryzen silicon being a half-step behind the Steam Deck on performance isn’t a deal-breaker either, even if it does feel a tad mismatched to the 1200p display resolution. Battery life is pretty average too, but the biggest issue is that Windows is still a dud on small touchscreens.

60% Lenovo Legion Go S review — I'd wait for the SteamOS version
Source: Tom's Guide English
This configuration of the Legion Go S—currently the only one available—is difficult to recommend. Though it features a comfortable ergonomic design, an excellent 8-inch display, and an easy-to-use launcher, its lackluster performance and Windows 11 headaches make the $729 asking price hard to justify. If you’re looking for an alternative Windows 11 handheld and are willing to pay a bit more, the Asus ROG Ally X ($799) is a fantastic choice. And though it costs $899, the MSI Claw 8 AI+ offers strong performance, long battery life, and an 8-inch display. If you’ve yet to jump on the Steam Deck hype train, the 1TB $649 model is the best overall handheld for playing PC games. But we shouldn’t completely dismiss the Lenovo Legion Go S, as upcoming versions could potentially make it a true Steam Deck rival.

70% Lenovo Legion Go S review: a preview of the first AMD Z2-powered gaming handhelds
Source: The Shortcut English
Lenovo has released the first AMD “Z2” powered gaming handheld, and while it's one of the most comfortable and attractive devices I’ve used, it’s too badly positioned to recommend to everyone. Priced at $729, the Lenovo Legion Go S has rolled out with a low-tier Z2 Go chip that’s somehow weaker than the Z1 Extreme but largely performs as well as the $799 Asus ROG Ally X. Unfortunately, it’s a hard sell when you consider Lenovo will release a $599 Windows OS version, $499 SteamOS model, and a more powerful Z2 and/or Z2 Extreme configuration later this May. The Lenovo Legion Go S can be an excellent gaming handheld for the right price and configuration that will likely be released later this year. It offers fantastic ergonomics with extra comforts like adjustable triggers and a mini trackpad.

The Lenovo Legion Go S is the gaming handheld many have been waiting for. That’s because Lenovo’s new device is the first non-Steam Deck handheld that runs on SteamOS. Lenovo Legion Go S official: $499 buys the first authorized third-party SteamOS handheld
Source: The Verge English
Lenovo is trying an experiment. In May, it will officially become the very first company outside of Valve to ship a handheld gaming PC with the Steam Deck’s wonderfully pick-up-and-play SteamOS instead of Microsoft Windows. And at $499, it’ll be a true Steam Deck rival, joining it as one of the lower-priced PC handhelds you can buy. That handheld will be the 1.6-pound Lenovo Legion Go S, a new and improved version of the company’s eight-inch handheld that ditches the Nintendo Switch-like detachable gamepads and kickstand for a lighter and more traditional design, with a sculpted grip that felt supremely comfortable in my hands.

Lenovo Legion Go S hands-on review: This could be the Steam Deck killer I’ve always wanted
Source: Tom's Guide English
Even though we have to wait until May 2025 to check out the SteamOS Legion Go S, I’m still looking forward to testing its Windows 11-powered counterpart in January. The smaller form factor should make it easier to use, and I’m eager to see how the updated D-Pad and new trigger locks hold up. But right now, the Legion Go S looks like one of 2025’s standout gaming handhelds. It shouldn’t be long until we get a unit to review, so stay tuned!

The Lenovo Legion Go S is the first third-party SteamOS handheld
Source: Engadget English
The Lenovo Legion Go is sort of like the SUV of gaming handhelds. It’s big and beefy and comes with extra equipment like detachable controllers, a kickstand and vertical mouse functionality that lets it adapt to all sorts of situations. Unfortunately, those features made it kind of bulky too, so at CES 2025, Lenovo is announcing a slightly more portable version called the Legion Go S with support for not one but two different OSes.

Lenovo: Lenovo ("Le" from English legend, novo (Latin) for new) was founded in 1984 as a Chinese computer trading company. As of 2004, the company was the largest laptop manufacturer in China and, after acquiring IBM's PC division in 2005, the fourth largest in the world. In addition to desktops and notebooks, the company manufactures monitors, projectors, servers, etc, and specializes in developing, manufacturing and marketing consumer electronics, personal computers, software, enterprise solutions and related services.

In 2016, the company ranked first in the world in computer sales. It still held it in 2023 with about 23% global market share. Important product lines are Thinkpad, Legion and Ideapad.

In 2011, it acquired a majority stake in Medion AG, a European computer hardware manufacturer. In 2014, Motorola Mobility was purchased, which gave Lenovo a boost in the smartphone market.

68.92%: This rating is poor. More than three quarters of the models are rated better. That is rather not a purchase recommendation. Even if verbal ratings in this area do not sound that bad ("sufficient" or "satisfactory"), they are usually euphemisms that disguise a classification as a below-average laptop.
