The 14-inch Lenovo Flex 5 is a powerful, attractive 2-in-1 that falls short with a dim display and a shallow keyboard. It had the potential to be great, but those cut corners make the Flex 5 only good at best.

While the 11th Generation Intel processors push the price higher than we'd like, it also means that this chipset and the RAM that accompanies it are ready for Windows 11 and years of faithful service. Just as the Flex 5 Chromebook handily won the title of Best Chromebook, the Lenovo Flex 5 (14") is coming for the crown among the Best Cheap Laptops.

Sure, the Flex 5 isn't perfect. The display isn't nearly as bright as I'd like, although it's fine for regular indoor use. Also, the pen storage design is just not good. I don't want to call it terrible because there are worse ways of doing it, but it's annoying. You have to remove the pen just to press the power button or to plug in a peripheral. And the thing is, the pen is docked exactly when I want to plug in a peripheral, when I'm at my desk.

The Flex 5 has a full HD IPS display and the latest AMD Ryzen 5 4500U and 7 4700U processors that are highly competitive with Intel’s offerings. The laptop has 360 degree hinges, a fingerprint scanner, backlit keyboard and a USB-C port and full size SD card slot. It competes with the HP Envy x360 13 and starts around $669.

The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is a solid choice if you’re looking for a productivity laptop that’s easy to bring around and has good performance without breaking the bank. You got solid build quality, good battery life, it’s a proper 2-in-1 laptop with touchscreen support, and it already has dual-channel RAM from the get-go. This is pretty good value for money.

Generally speaking, laptops are a series of trade-offs. Some folks might be willing to compromise on battery life to get more outright performance, or would be happy to tether a traditional laptop to their phone as an internet hotspot. For those folks, there are other options. However, for those who value incredible battery life and 5G connectivity without the need for a hotspot or tethering above all other considerations, there's a short list of devices out there that can deliver and it starts with the Lenovo Flex 5G. It's for this demographic and in that situation that we're proclaiming this system HotHardware Approved. The Lenovo Flex 5G is an excellent example of what Qualcomm's Snapdragon 8cx always-connected PC platform has to offer.

If you absolutely, positively need a 5G laptop this very second, by all means, head on down to your local Verizon store and sign up for the Lenovo Flex 5G. It delivers the goods once it connects to a 5G signal (provided you can find one), it delivers all-day-plus battery, and it boasts a solid (if heavy) design with a bright full-HD display and plenty of biometrics. But the Flex 5G’s Snapdragon 8cx processor constrains its productivity performance. Given the army of competing 5G laptops that’s about to arrive, our instinct would be to wait on this one.

The Lenovo Flex 5G's only justification for its price tag is almost entirely irrelevant at the moment and its ARM CPU lags badly behind its Intel and AMD rivals in terms of performance and compatibility, making it very hard to recommend at this time for anyone but enthusiasts and early adopters.

The Lenovo Flex 5G is a device hindered by compromises. The laptop hardware itself is fine, but not as spiffy or appealing as a $1,499 laptop should be. Lenovo’s display is great inside, but falters outdoors due to the glossy glass. While the keyboard is excellent, and augmented by truly useful shortcut keys, the touchpad is average and the ports are limited. Performance is where the Flex 5G really shines. The Snapdragon 8cx chewed through all my productivity apps with ease, and battery life is absolutely out of this world. 5G speeds were excellent, though Verizon’s signal is hardly ubiquitous. This performance, however, is offset by the lack of support for 64-bit x86 apps.

All-in-all, this is a really great PC, with a pretty 1080p display, a nice and quiet keyboard, and cellular connectivity. It's just a mid-range laptop with flagship pricing, and that couldn't be more evident than by the fact that it doesn't ship with a pen, or that you can't configure it with more than 8GB RAM. I love Windows on ARM PCs for a lot of reasons, so it pains me to say this, but I really don't feel like I can recommend the Flex 5G.

The Flex 5G has incredible battery life and solid cellular internet connectivity, but it's too expensive to be worth buying in a global pandemic and recession. Especially since Windows on ARM still needs a lot more work to be a reliable daily-driver.

Lenovo's Flex 5G is equipped with Qualcomm's 8cx processor, a mobile chip with 5G connectivity. The 8cx is theoretically capable of great performance, but we found the Flex 5G painfully slow. It's also an ARM processor, meaning it has limited compatibility with many programs, some of our favorite benchmarks wouldn't even run. The bright spots are excellent battery life, a good keyboard, and that 5G antenna, though we were never actually able to find a 5G signal.

It’s thin; it’s light … and it’s always connected to the internet. By now, the formula for laptops like the Lenovo Flex 5G is pretty well established: instead of a chip from Intel or AMD, at its core sits an ARM-based Snapdragon 8cx that has much more in common with smartphone silicon. Instead of being built for power, it’s built to wake up quickly, use battery power sparingly, and maintain a constant connection to the web.

There will be better 5G laptops in the future, but like the state of 5G in general, we’re not there yet. And it’s not clear when more options that support 5G will arrive, be cheaper, easier to find, or more convenient to use. For right now, Lenovo’s Flex 5G is an incredibly safe bet as a first-generation device. Compared to what the first round of 5G-enabled phones looked like, there’s not much about the design that sets it apart from other laptops. And until support for ARM processors improves drastically, the fast but fleeting 5G service that’s available currently through Verizon isn’t appealing enough to make this investment — or the monthly cost for Verizon’s 5G — worthwhile.

Lisa Gade reviews the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5, an affordable 14” Windows 2-in-1 convertible laptop with 360 degree hinges, a full HD IPS touch screen and Wacom AES active pen support. So, the Intel version of this laptop is having a lot of struggles. The most prominent one comes from the cooling solution – especially when you have the GeForce MX330 onboard. During gaming (and with the “Extreme performance” profile applied) we saw the temperatures to not only creep up but maintain at 93C on the GPU and 97C on the processor. And if you choose the more forgiving “Intelligent cooling” profile, you end up losing performance. By the way, introducing a cooling pad drastically improves the thermals of the notebooks, as it appears that the design of the device is not optimized for airflow. So, at the end of the day, it might just be a better choice to pick the Intel Core i7-1065G7 only with its integrated graphics. Or just go for the AMD options, as they will provide a lot more headroom for productivity.

Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14ARE05-81X2004YGE
The Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14ARE05-81X2004YGE is an ultraportable productivity laptop that is slightly thicker compared to similar products, but that does not change the fact that it is easy to be carried around, as it weighs a mere 1.6 kg. Furthermore, it is a 2-in-1 laptop, so the hinge allows the screen to be flipped up to 360 degrees, turning it into a tablet as well. As for the lid, it has a Light Teal colour scheme which appeals to a younger crowd. Even though it is made of plastic, it is surprisingly sturdy as does not feel cheap or easy to break. In addition, the Lenovo logo takes up a small space on the top-left side, giving it a minimalist look with a clean finish.
As far as the display is concerned, this laptop has been equipped with a 14-inch Full-HD IPS touchscreen along with a webcam with a privacy shutter in the top bezel. It is worth noting that the display supports the Lenovo Digital Pen. The pen is actually an optional extra that offers 4,096 levels of pressure sensitivity and includes two customizable buttons. This makes it a full-fledged digital stylus, unlike the integrated digital pens included with premium 2-in-1s like the Lenovo Yoga C940 and the Samsung Galaxy Book Flex. However, the display does suffer from a relatively dim backlight rated at just 250 nits of brightness. While the display is definitely fine for darker homes, it appears to be less suited for brightly lit environments such as offices. In terms of its keyboard, the device carries a chiclet keyboard with white backlighting. It is actually derived from Lenovo's flagship ThinkPad keyboards with a few subtle differences. Apart from that, there is a fingerprint scanner just below the right arrow key with speaker grilles sandwiching the keyboard. However, as one would expect from a laptop of this size, the Numpad is absent on this device.
In terms of connectivity, there is a single proprietary charging port, an HDMI port, a single USB Type-C port and a combo audio jack on the left side of the laptop. On the right side, there is a power button, an SD-card reader along with two USB Type-A ports. There is nothing on the rear except for the hinges and a single air vent. As for the processor, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 features the AMD Ryzen 5 4500U processor along with the AMD Radeon Graphics as the GPU. As for its battery, the laptop has been equipped with a capacious 52Wh battery and improvements unique to Renoir chips, such as the redesigned power interface with three distinct states. This simply means that the operating system can better communicate to the Ryzen 5 exactly how much power is required for a given task. Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is a great device to be explored, depending on the need and preference of the user.

Ladies and gents, today, we introduced you to a beastly little convertible called the IdeaPad Flex 5 (14″, 2022). Although it was equipped with an older AMD processor, we can’t say that it was a failure. Quite the opposite in fact. Its fantastic dual-heat-pipe cooling solution produced a heroic and managed to give the Ryzen 5 5500U (in our case) the maximum possible headroom we’ve ever seen. And we’ve tested this processor with substantially bigger laptops too. Unfortunately, its memory is soldered to the motherboard, which is not great for future-proofing your laptop. Another nail in the imaginary coffin of this device is the 16GB maximum configuration. Yes, this is plenty, but there is no guarantee that you won’t need 32GB for something a bit more intensive in the future. Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 (14″, 2022)’s IPS panel has a WUXGA resolution, comfortable viewing angles, and a good contrast ratio. Its backlight doesn’t use PWM for brightness adjustment, which is great. However, it covers only 54% of the sRGB color gamut, which essentially means that you miss half of the colors found on the Web. In addition, the glossy surface makes it pretty hard to work outdoors, as the maximum brightness is not high enough to compensate. Obviously, there is the 100% sRGB option you can pick, but its maximum brightness is still pegged at 300 nits. What is not limited, though, is the use of SD cards. Yes, this convertible has an SD card reader. This makes it great for photographers, who can edit their pictures on the go. Well, if they are willing to sacrifice color grading (in the case of our configuration’s display). At the end of the day, the laptop is really comfortable to use. Its keyboard and touchpad are good, but its dedicated Pen is amazing. For one, it sits as a further turn-on for the photographers we just mentioned.

With the AMD Ryzen 5000 hardware inside, the Flex 5 is one of the most powerful 14-inch budget laptops you can get right now. It's also a convertible and doesn't compromise on the build quality, inputs, audio, IO, or battery life, but it does come with one major deal-breaker: a dim and washed-out display with a 60% sRGB panel. That's just not for me and I'd rather pay extra or even sacrifice on the performance just to get a usable display instead. You, however, might feel otherwise, and if that's the case, you'll hardly find a better value laptop in this class. My entire experience with this notebook is documented down below.

You, however, might feel otherwise, and if that's the case, you'll hardly find a better value laptop in this class. My entire experience with this notebook is documented down below.

As far as affordable laptops go, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 is a good choice. While the dim display is disappointing, it was a joy using this laptop. I had no problems surfing the web no matter how many tabs were open, and I could rely on the long battery life to keep me entertained throughout the day. And while it’s made mostly of plastic, the Flex 5 still looks and feels like a sleek, sturdy device that’s well worth the investment. That is if you can find it in stock. Unfortunately, Lenovo appears to have discontinued this laptop, and pricing from third-party retailers varies wildly. If you’re not into hunting down your preferred configuration or can't find a good deal on the Flex 5, check out the similarly priced HP Envy 13 x360.

Lenovo's IdeaPad Flex 5i 14 is exactly the sort of 2-in-1 convertible you'd expect from the company that pioneered this category. It's a sensible machine that's pleasing to use as a conventional laptop, or propped up for a presentation in easel or tent mode. The chassis is well-engineered, even if it's not the sleekest or lightest around. And the processing power is decent, thanks in large part to the generous 16GB of RAM and 512GB SSD of our test unit. You can do better if you venture north of $1,000—our top premium 2-in-1 pick is the HP Spectre x360 14, while the ThinkBook 14s Yoga is great for small and medium businesses. For around $700, though, it's hard to beat this configuration of the Flex 5i 14, which claims our Editors' Choice award for best midrange 2-in-1 convertible.

Some of my favorite laptops have been from Lenovo over the years. I’ve had many Thinkpads and laptops, and I currently own a Yoga 710. When they offered to send me the 2021 version of the Lenovo Flex 5 14″ 2-in-1 Touchscreen Laptop (ITL05) on loan, I had to check it out. Will the 11th generation Core i5, 16GB of RAM, and 512GB of storage in this svelte frame impress, or will it disappoint? Let’s take a look.

To sum it up, this laptop is without a doubt comparable to 1k+ laptops or ultrabooks. Although we cannot mention all of its nice details in this review, it would be hard to find another better device of this size. Most other similar-priced laptops out there have only 8GB, this one has 16GB straight out of the gate. At this price, this Lenovo Flex 5 14 82HU0036US is the 2-in-1 laptop to get if you are looking for a convertible ultrabook with a touchscreen and power inside.

Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 is a superior 2-in-1 laptop and retains its Editors’ Choice award. Still, if all you need is raw CPU performance at a rock-bottom price in a hybrid laptop, the Asus VivoBook Flip 14 TP470EA-AS34T has plenty of charm inside its fantastic shell.

A great laptop under $600 is tough to make without some severe compromises. The IdeaPad Flex 5i gets very close to hitting that mark, with its well-built chassis, solid keyboard and touchpad, and good-enough performance. However, its battery life is very disappointing, particularly by modern standards. The real problem is the Asus Zenbook 14 OLED, which costs only $64 more, despite having a better OLED display and much longer battery life. Know that the IdeaPad Flex 5i isn’t a bad laptop for the money, but I have a hard time recommending it when the Zenbook 14 OLED is right there on offer.

If you’re beholden to the Windows ecosystem but want the best experience possible out of a $500 laptop, check out the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i 14. For the light multitasking performance it offers alongside a snappy keyboard, a decent display, a good webcam, and a host of connectivity ports, it’s an attractive deal. Its short battery life is the only thing I can see being a dealbreaker for some people. If it is for you, and you have more wiggle room in your budget, the Acer Swift Go 14 (2023) is the next best option. In addition to longer battery life, it's better for heavy multitasking. But for the cost and versatility — the IdeaPad Flex’s 2-in-1 form factor and the fact that Windows can run many more programs than ChromeOS — I’d steer any high school or college student toward the Flex instead of a Chromebook.

Lenovo's IdeaPad Flex 5 is a great laptop for what it's designed for. Whether it's for use in schools, an enterprise setting, or for users who want a locked down and highly optimized laptop, its modest suite of hardware (and agreeable $679 price point) go much further than they would otherwise. If you don't like the idea of using Windows S mode, there are other budget laptops that I'd suggest instead, like Acer's Aspire Go 15 for $299. If you like the idea of a streamlined and efficient laptop for an agreeable price, but want more integration with Google's suite of apps and services, you'd be better off with a Chromebook like Lenovo's Duet Gen 9.

Overall, the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5i 14-inch is well-built, easily handled with a comfortable keyboard and a bright screen, and relatively capable for its price. You certainly wouldn’t use it as a PC gamer—but for general office work, it offers enough performance. The screen is a bit of a wild card, since we tested 400 nits, while Lenovo only promises 300, and the color coverage could use a boost. Still, if you’re a general student or at-home worker (who isn’t these days?), this could be a smart pick. If you want a better display for a couple hundred dollars more, check out the Lenovo Yoga 7i. If you yearn for faster performance as well as a better screen, consider the Acer Spin 5. But, for someone who just wants a modestly priced, versatile, and easily moved convertible for office tasks, internet browsing and webcam sessions, look to the Flex 5i retail version.

14.00:
14 inch display size represents a middle ground between the small subnotebook formats and the screens of the standard 15 inch laptops.
The reason for the popularity of mid-sized displays is that this size is reasonably easy on the eyes, provides good resolutions with usable detail sizes, yet does not consume too much power and the devices can still be reasonably compact.
In the past, 14-inch devices were very rare, but now they are the standard for laptops after the 15-inchers.

78.86%: This rating is not earth-shattering. This rating must actually be seen as average, since there are about as many devices with worse ratings as better ones. A purchase recommendation can only be seen with a lot of goodwill, unless it is about websites that generally rate strictly.
