AMD's bet on higher core counts is paying off when it comes to pure multi-thread performance. Nonetheless, Intel still has the upper hand when it comes to AI integration, single-thread performance, and native Thunderbolt support.

Laptops sporting the AMD Ryzen 5000U CPU series are now starting to land on store shelves to replace last year's Ryzen 4000U series. One of these first laptops is the Lenovo IdeaPad Flex 5 14 which comes with the octa-core Ryzen 7 5700U. Unlike the higher-end Ryzen 7 5800U, the 5700U is still based on the older Zen 2 architecture instead of the newer Zen 3. Even so, its raw performance is substantially ahead of every Intel ULV CPU in the market today to the point where it can stand toe-to-toe with newer Core H-series CPUs.

Our bar graphs below compare our first Ryzen 7 5700U test sample, the IdeaPad Flex 5 14, to the average performances of popular Intel CPUs like the 11th gen Tiger Lake Core i7-1165G7, Core i7-10875H, and even the Core i9-10885H in common CPU-heavy benchmarks. Raw multi-thread performance is almost 2x that of the Core i7-1165G7 which is to be expected given that the Ryzen CPU has exactly double the core count and thread count. Performance is so far ahead of Intel's premier Core i7 ULV CPU that scores are able to rival the CPUs in pricey gaming laptops like the Razer Blade 15.

We were expecting the AMD CPU in the Lenovo system to throttle heavily over time, but that does not appear to be the case. Running CineBench R15 xT in a loop shows no steep drops in scores as shown by the graph below for a consistently high level of performance.

It's still not a homerun for AMD despite the impressive raw multi-thread performance. Single-thread performance continues to be behind the average Core i7-1165G7 by about 10 to 15 percent while hardware-based AI acceleration is still not yet a focal point for the red chipmaker. An integrated Thunderbolt controller also continues to be absent which means most Ryzen U-series laptops will lack Thunderbolt support in contrast to most Ice Lake or Tiger Lake alternatives. We suspect that Intel will likely continue to expand its set of integrated auxiliary features to further distinguish its CPUs from AMD in the foreseeable future.
