Leica has unveiled the SL3-S - a 24.6MP full-frame mirrorless camera with advanced autofocus, 6K video recording, in addition to pro-grade features, enhanced connectivity, and a robust design. It's priced at €5,190 (~$5,295 in the US).
Leica has officially introduced its SL3-S mirrorless camera. This right here is a major update to the SL-System lineup, serving as a successor to the SL2-S. At its core, the SL3-S features a 24.6MP full-frame BSI CMOS sensor and the Maestro IV processor. This pairing provides an expanded ISO range of 50 to 200,000 and supports multi-shot modes for capturing 48MP or 96MP images.
The camera includes in-body image stabilization with five stops of compensation for extra reliability during handheld shooting scenarios. Autofocus is powered by a hybrid 779-point system, integrating phase detection, depth map object detection, and contrast detection. With full autofocus support, the SL3-S can shoot continuously at up to 30 frames per second, making it Leica’s fastest system camera to date, the company states.

The SL3-S looks to be great for high-performance video recording. It supports Open Gate 6K recording at a 3:2 aspect ratio and 5.9K RAW output at 30fps via external recorders. FYI, you can also get a similar sensor with Open Gate 6K recording on the Panasonic S5 II (curr. $1,597 on Amazon) without the big price tag. Internally, the Leica records ProRes 4:2:2 HQ in 5.8K at 30fps or C4K at 60fps with no time limitations. Additionally, external SSD recording is supported via the USB-C port, which should be super convenient for longer sessions. A dedicated timecode interface is present for precise synchronization for professional workflows. The Maestro IV processor should handle the demanding data throughput while maintaining excellent dynamic range and color accuracy.
Connectivity options include dual card slots for CFexpress Type B and UHS-II SD cards, a full-size HDMI 2.1 output, and USB-C for data transfer, tethering, and power delivery. Wireless options such as Bluetooth and Wi-Fi with MIMO technology ensure stable and fast connections to the Leica Fotos app.

A key feature debuting with the SL3-S is the integration of Content Credentials technology. Aligned with the Content Authenticity Initiative, this feature embeds tamper-proof metadata with recorded media, including creation details and editing history, to ensure image authenticity. Verification tools like verify.contentauthenticity.org can be used to validate these credentials.
The design of the SL3-S retains the familiar layout of the SL3, as covered in earlier leaks, including the 3.2-inch tilting touchscreen and 5.76M-dot EyeRes EVF with 120fps refresh rate. The camera body is crafted from durable milled aluminum and magnesium, offering IP54 certification for dust and moisture resistance. The SL3-S is fully compatible with the L-Mount ecosystem, supporting a wide range of lenses from Leica, Panasonic, and Sigma. Additional compatibility with Leica M lenses is taken care of through an optional adapter.
The SL3-S is available globally to preorder at a recommended retail price of €5,190, inclusive of VAT. B&H Photo Video has listed the camera for $5,295. The launch also coincides with Leica’s centennial celebrations, commemorating 100 years since the debut of the original Leica I.
