To commemorate the 100th anniversary of the Leica I, Leica has already released a limited-edition Leica M11 and various gadgets. The company has now updated its LUX iPhone app with a filter designed to replicate the look of a Leica I paired with a Leica Elmar 50 mm f/3.5.
This new simulation is available starting with version 1.4 of the Leica LUX app, which can be downloaded for free from the App Store. However, a paid subscription is required to gain access to all features. The subscription costs $6.99 per month or $69.99 per year. Leica LUX is an iOS exclusive, leaving out Android users.
Leica has revealed only a few details regarding the app’s latest film simulation, including the fact that photos are captured in black and white, as colour film wasn’t common back in the 1920s. The virtual aperture can be adjusted from f/3.5 to f/5.6 to let users simulate their desired bokeh. The filter also tries to replicate the coarse film grain and gentle contrast typical of photography during that period.
The simulated Leica Elmar 50 mm f/3.5 delivers relatively high performance in the middle of an image but only reproduces sparse details on the edges. Due to the lens’ collapsible design, the Leica I combined with the Elmar lens was compact enough to carry in a large trouser or coat pocket.
