The Leica Q full-frame compact camera has been equipped with a 28 mm f/1.7 Leica Summilux lens since the launch of the first generation in June 2015. Now, for the first time, Leica is developing a model with a different focal length and a high-quality APO Summicron lens.

The Leica Q3 combines a 60.3 MP full-frame sensor with a 28 mm f/1.7 lens, giving the camera a comparable angle of view to the main cameras of many current smartphones. The camera allows photos to be taken with a focal length of 35 mm, 50 mm, 75 mm or 90 mm, but uses digital zoom, which reduces the resolution to 39 MP, 18.9 MP, 8.4 MP or 5.8 MP, depending on the zoom factor.

As LeicaRumors recently learned from its sources, Leica is now developing a Leica Q with a different focal length for the first time, namely a 43 mm f/2 APO-Summicron lens, whereby the actual focal length may vary slightly, but is expected to be close to 40 mm. Interestingly, 43 mm is exactly the normal focal length on a full-frame sensor, as the sensor measures 43 millimeters diagonally.

The "APO" suffix indicates that the camera lens is apochromatically corrected. This generally means that light of every wavelength hits the sensor at exactly the same point, which should eliminate color errors and artifacts such as chromatic aberration. APO-Summicron lenses are traditionally among the highest quality, but also the most expensive lenses from Leica: the APO-Summicron-M 1:2/35 ASPH. costs $8,495, for example. The Leica Q3 with 28 mm lens is available for $6,295. No further details on the new variant of the Leica Q3 are yet known. Information on the features of the current model can be found on the official product page.
