Some gamers may hope to score an older Nvidia card at a discount after the RTX 50 series release date. The new GPUs support DLSS 4’s Multi Frame Generation, which promises significant performance boosts. Yet, without the feature, the RTX 40 series hardly looks obsolete in terms of horsepower. Unfortunately, retailers are already anticipating the end of life for the RTX 4070 and RTX 4060.
The Tawainese tech site iThome posted a report from a dealer confirming that the RTX 4070 would not be restocked after January. With the RTX 5060 not expected until March or later, the RTX 4060 should remain available for a longer period of time. Since iThome is a Chinese-language website, English translations of Nvidia inventory updates soon spread on X accounts.
This news hardly comes as a surprise, considering the manufacturer’s history. Even without Nvidia officially discontinuing the RTX 3080, finding one new went from difficult to impossible when the 40 series launched. The GPU giant is focusing production on the RTX 50 series, with the RTX 5090 and RTX 5080 slated for release on January 30th. Following on their heels will be the RTX 5070 and RTX 5070 Ti in February.
Stopping production of last-generation GPUs this soon will undoubtedly frustrate some buyers. Stock levels of the RTX 4080 and RTX 4080 Super have already dwindled significantly. Nvidia may hope to limit price gouging on these when buyers are unable to order a new 50 series GPU. However, less selection is seldom beneficial to consumers, especially if performance gains in the new cards disappoint.
