Deal | Panasonic Lumix S9 compact full-frame hybrid camera gets substantial Amazon discount with kit lens

The Panasonic Lumix S9 caused something of an upset in the camera world when it launched last year — both positively and negatively. Not only is it uncharacteristically small for a full-frame camera, beating out even some Micro Four Thirds cameras for size, it also ditched the mechanical shutter entirely and packed some serious video chops. It also comes in a number of different coloured faux leather finishes, giving it some character.

During the current Amazon deal, the Panasonic Lumix S9 with a Panasonic Lumix 20–60 mm F3.5–5.6 kit lens is down to just $1,399.99, making it a solid deal compared to rivals like the APS-C Fujifilm X-T50 (curr. $1,399 on Amazon with no lens) and the Sony A6700 (curr. $1,398 on Amazon with no lens). The deal applies to the black, blue, green, and red colour ways of the compact full-frame camera. 

Talking basic specifications, the Lumix S9 has a full-frame, 24.2 MP BSI CMOS sensor with 5-axis IBIS (rated to 5 stops or 6.5 stops with Dual IS and a stabilised lens), and Panasonic claims the sensor is capable of 14 stops of latitude when recording in V-Log. Some of the biggest gripes about the Lumix S9 are the features Panasonic had to remove to achieve the compact size, however. For starters, the camera has no hot shoe and no compatibility with external flashes, which takes it out of the running for high-end portraiture and studio work. 

The Panasonic Lumix S9 is, first and foremost, a creator- and social media-focussed camera, with video taking centre-stage thanks to a completely electronic shutter and features like in-body image stabilisation, open-gate 6K, 30p video recording in 4:2:0, 10-bit. As for quality of life features, the Lumix S9 connects to smartphones using Bluetooth Low Energy, and it can be controlled by the smartphone or simply transmit stored images. This, again, shows that Panasonic designed this camera for social media use or as a B camera. 

The lens bundled with the Panasonic Lumix S9 at the discounted $1,399 Amazon deal price is the Panasonic Lumix S Series 20–60 mm F/3.5–5.6 zoom kit lens. It's by no means a fantastic lens, but as a starter kit, it's tough to go wrong with that zoom range. 

If you're looking for a prime lens, however, Panasonic is running a promotion on its own shop that bundles the Panasonic Lumix S Series 50 mm F/1.8 prime L-Mount lens for the same $1,399.99.
