2025 looks to be a busy year for camera launches, with OM System already poised to launch a new retro-themed Micro Four Thirds camera early in the year. Now, it looks like the new Sony A7 V will join that OM-3 shortly afterwards. A new set of leaks and rumours, including one official Indonesian SDI listing (via Photorumors) have tipped several details about the upcoming A7 V.
The Indonesian certification more or less confirms that the camera will arrive in the next few months, at the very least in 2025. The model number, listed by the site as WW277226, closely matches other cameras in the A7 line, including the A7R IV and A7C R, both of which launched too recently to be getting a new update this year, leaving the Sony A7S IV and A7 V as the two remaining options. Given the rumours that Sony has axed the A7S line-up in favour of more dedicated video cameras, the A7 V looks to be the most likely.
The regulatory information doesn't tell us much about what to expect from the A7 V, but A7 V leaks from the likes of Andrea Pizzini and Sony Alpha Rumors paint a clearer picture of the new full-frame hybrid camera.
For starters, it looks like the A7 V will launch sometime between March and April, with a March announcement seeming more likely. Specifications leaks indicate that the A7 V will feature a faster 44 MP full-frame sensor and more AI enhancements over its predecessor. Some of those AI features are likely to affect autofocus performance and tracking, as is always the case with Sony cameras. Video upgrades are also expected, as is 4K recording at 120 fps. The price will allegedly also be similar to the $2,499 pricing of the Sony A7 IV (which is currently discounted to $2,198 on Amazon).
Aside from that, not much has leaked about the Sony A7 V, and that which has leaked is far from guaranteed, as usual. Still, it looks like a number of camera manufacturers are gearing up for new launches, which will make 2025 an interesting year for photography, since the competition will be tougher than usual.
