HP has unveiled the Z Captis digital material scanner system integrated with Adobe Substance 3D Sampler, allowing businesses and 3D creatives to digitize real-world surface textures for use on 3D models. The HP Z Captis is a Best of Innovation honoree in the CES Innovation Awards 2025 program.
The unique cone design of the Z Captis allows the eight internal light panels to shine polarized light onto objects from all directions, revealing details that are hidden under normal, non-polarized lighting while digitizing materials with the 108 megapixel camera. This system gives 3D modelers the digitized textures of fabrics, surface materials, and real-world objects that they can apply to digital twins for use in virtual clothing try-on, interior design, and other 3D apps.
The camera is capable of outputting images with a resolution of 12,000 x 9,000 pixels at up to 9 frames per second while capturing material texture samples up to 11.8 x 11.8 in. (30 x 30 cm) in size. An Explorer mode coupled with the Explorer ring can be used outdoors to sample larger objects.
The system is powered by a custom CaptisOS running on the Nvidia Jetson AGX Xavier system-on-module, which incorporates an 8-core Carmel Arm CPU with a 512-core Volta GPU with 64 Tensor cores capable of delivering up to 32 TOPS of AI performance. The 2 TB NVMe M.2 2280 SSD can be swapped out for larger storage modules. The Z Captis can be operated over a wired USB-C connection or a wireless Wi-Fi 6 connection.
The HP Z Captis system has an MSRP of $19,999. The unit measures 8.9 x 16.7 x 24.8 in. (22.6 x 42.4 x 63.0 cm) and weighs 76 lbs. (34.5 kg). Users will also need to purchase an Adobe Substance 3D license (Texturing license for $19.99 per month or Collection license for $49.99 per month). Readers wanting to learn how to use Adobe Substance 3D can read about it in this book on Amazon.
