Last year, HP announced a large scale restructuring of its laptop lineup. The impact was especially huge on the consumer lineup, where all brands were consolidated into the "OmniBook". HP kept things more steady when it came to the business lineup. The EliteBook brand was allowed to continue, though with a new numbering scheme.
Last year's EliteBook laptops were the last one that still used the old naming system, so the 2025 models are the ones where the change is implemented. This is why the 2024 premium-model HP EliteBook 1040 G11 (available from Amazon) is not getting replaced by an EliteBook 1040 G12, but rather by the HP EliteBook X G1i and its 2-in-1 counterpart HP EliteBook X Flip G1i. Both were just announced at CES 2025 and both will come to the market with Intel's Lunar Lake CPUs.
HP EliteBook X G1i & EliteBook X Flip G1i: Update of the HP EliteBook 1040 G11 with Lunar Lake
The new seems to imply an all-around redesign, but in reality, the new HP EliteBook X G1i is just a small update of the EliteBook 1040 G11. The existing chassis design is preserved, as is the port selection. Details like the battery capacity (68 Wh) and screen choice stay identical, too. There is one change though: The new model will also be offered in dark blue instead of silver, so there is at least one design change.
Changes are concentrated on the internals, as Intel Lunar Lake replaces the Meteor Lake platform. This also brings the introduction of the Intel ARC 140V GPU and on-Package memory. The RAM was already soldered with the predecessor and limited to 32 GB anyway, so this change is not that impactful.
With a starting weight of just 1.18 kg, the HP EliteBook X G1i is a laptop of the "Apple MacBook Air" weight class. Of course, since this is an enterprise laptop, it has more ports, such as HDMI and USB A, as well as security features and a physical camera shutter switch.
Slightly confusing from HP is the naming when it comes to the AMD equipped HP EliteBook X G1a. The naming would imply that the both are similar, but the AMD model has a distinct design. With a weight of 1.5 kg, it plays more in the weight class of the Apple MacBook Pro 14. The choice between Intel and AMD is not just a choice between Core Ultra and Ryzen AI, it is also a choice between a more performance oriented laptop and a more mobility focused one.
HP EliteBook X G1i and HP EliteBook X Flip G1i: Pricing and availability
Both the HP EliteBook X G1i and its convertible counterpart HP EliteBook X Flip G1i will be available in the United States in February. The HP EliteBook X Flip G1i is the more expensive one of the two, with a base price of $2,249. The regular EliteBook X G1i starts at $1,999.
