When HMD still manufactured and sold Nokia smartphones, it released a couple of rugged smartphones such as the Nokia XR20 and Nokia XR21 (relaunched as the HMD XR21). Now, the Finnish manufacturer seems to be planning a new model that will launch as the HMD XR22, and its full spec sheet has leaked.
The specifications of the HMD XR22 were posted on X by smashx_60, and they reveal the phone will bring significant upgrades over its predecessor, the HMD XR21 (available on Amazon for $439).
According to the post, the Nokia XR22 will have an FHD+ 120Hz OLED display with a peak brightness of 1,200 nits and Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection. While the screen size isn't mentioned, the display is an upgrade from the 6.49-inch LCD panel of the XR21 which is protected by Gorilla Glass Victus and has a high brightness mode of 550 nits.
Inside the HMD XR22 will be a Snapdragon 6s Gen 3 processor paired with 8GB of RAM and 256GB of expandable storage. For context, its predecessor has a Snapdragon 695 processor, 6GB of RAM, and 128GB of non-expandable storage.
HMD's upcoming rugged smartphone will also be getting a camera upgrade according to the leak. The primary camera is reported to be a 64MP sensor paired with an 8MP ultrawide angle camera. That's identical to that of the Nokia XR21. However, it will have a third sensor which is an 8MP night vision camera. In the front, it will have a 50MP camera like the HMD Skyline (curr. available on Amazon for $399).
The HMD XR22 will also get a bigger 5,520mAh battery capacity, an upgrade from the 4,800mAh battery inside the XR21. It will still charge at 33W via a USB-C port but will add support for Qi 2.0 15W wireless charging. The leak also mentions the phone will have dual speakers and an IR blaster and will both be IP69K and MIL-STD-810H certified.
Details about launch, price, colors, and availability remain unknown. Nevertheless, if the phone isn't announced before the end of the year, we can expect it to launch at CES 2025 or MWC 2025.
