Less than a year after announcing the Oppo A3 Pro, Oppo has announced a successor. The Oppo A5 Pro arrives as the latest in Oppo's line of mid-range smartphones with enhanced durability albeit without the looks for it to be dubbed a rugged smartphone.
The Oppo A5 Pro, unsurprisingly, has launched first in China, and it arrives with a fresh design. Oppo has ditched the curved frame of the Oppo A3 Pro for a flat one. It is not all boxy though, as the corners are rounded. This should make the phone comfortable to hold. There's still a circular camera island on the back but the ring around it has a different style.
The Oppo A5 Pro still retains some of its predecessors features such as Gorilla Glass Victus 2 protection on the front and Oppo Crystal Shield Glass on the back. Oppo claims the phone has 360° drop resistance and will survive falls from a height of up to 1.8 meters. It can also survive extreme temperatures (-35°C to 63°C), extreme weather conditions (sandstorms, solar radiation, high humidity), and violent impacts.
The Oppo A5 Pro has a triple IP rating (IP69, IP68, and IP66) and will survive not only immersion in water and spills from a variety of liquids including carbonated drinks and salt water spray, but also high pressure jet (cold and hot).
In terms of its specifications, the Oppo A5 Pro has a 6.7-inch FHD+ AMOLED display that is slightly curved at all four edges. The display has a peak brightness of 1200 nits, support for glove mode, and Oppo's Splash Touch technology which ensures responsiveness isn't affected even if there's water on the screen or your fingers are wet.
The phone is powered by MediaTek's Dimensity 7300 processor and paired with 8GB or 12GB of LPDDR4X RAM and 256GB or 512GB of UFS 3.1 storage. Despite the A5 Pro packing some pretty impressive durability features and specs, its cameras are a letdown. There's a 50MP primary camera on the back along with a 2MP monochrome camera while the front-facing camera is a 16MP sensor.
Oppo has given the A5 Pro a battery upgrade. Compared to its predecessor which has a 5,000mAh battery that charges at 67W, the Oppo A5 Pro has a 6,000mAh battery that charges at 80W. It also has an in-display fingerprint scanner, face unlock, Bluetooth 5.4, NFC, dual SIM, and stereo speakers.
The Oppo A5 Pro is available in Red, Rock Black, Quartz White, and Sandstone Purple. Pricing starts at ¥1,999 (~$274/€264) for the base model with 8GB RAM and 256GB of storage while the 8+512GB version and 12+256GB variants are both priced at ¥2,199 (~$301/€290). The 12+512GB version is ¥2,499 (~$343/€330).
