Kobo finally fixes syncing issues on its e-readers

Kobo has overhauled the backend system that syncs bookmarks and reading progress between its e-readers, mobile apps, and cloud reader, after years of complaints that progress would not carry over correctly from one device to another. The announcement was made via a series of posts on social media from CEO Michael Tambyn, who acknowledged that the old syncing infrastructure dated back to the company's earliest days and had become unreliable as Kobo's device- and app lineup expanded.

Notably, the fix is not automatic. Owners must manually carry it out on every device and app they use. On an e-reader, that means going to Settings > Device Information> Repair Your Kobo Account. For apps, the equivalent step is simply signing out and signing back in. The latter step also works on e-readers, just more slowly. Users must repeat this on each device tied to their account, though only once, after which syncing should continue working normally.

The fix only applies to purchased Kobo e-books, and presumably library and Kobo Plus titles; it does not extend to sideloaded content. Those possibly considering purchasing an e-reader are advised to take a look at the Kobo Libra Colour, which offers a balanced mix of features, color display and physical controls.
