Amazon Fire TV and Kindle list prices jump, checkout prices do not

Amazon has raised the recommended list prices for much of its own hardware in Germany, effective Monday. Kindle e-readers, the Fire TV Sticks, the Fire TV Cube, Echo speakers and the eero routers are all affected. The move follows the US increase that Fortune reported first on 21 August. There is no press release for the German market, and Amazon has not commented on it separately. On the US hike, a spokesperson said the consumer electronics industry is facing significantly higher costs for memory and storage components, and that the company absorbed those costs for as long as it could before adjusting pricing across its product lines.

What the product pages say now

We opened each affected page on Tuesday afternoon. The Fire TV Stick HD now carries a recommendation of 64.99 euros, up from 44.99. The Fire TV Stick 4K Select sits at 69.99 instead of 54.99, the 4K Plus at 84.99 instead of 69.99, and the 4K Max at 114.99 instead of 79.99. The largest jump in absolute terms is the Fire TV Cube, which climbs from 159.99 to 229.99 euros. The Kindle Paperwhite with ads is listed at 209.99 euros, previously 169.99. The current Echo Dot is now at 89.99 euros, up from 64.99, and the eero 7 three-pack at 429.99 instead of 399.99.

Two of our readings differ from tables published elsewhere on Monday and Tuesday, which put the Paperwhite at 219.99 euros and the Echo Dot at 79.99. The arithmetic settles it. Amazon itself shows the Paperwhite at 169.99 euros with a 19 percent discount, and that only works against 209.99. The Echo Dot shows 39.99 euros at 56 percent off, which matches 89.99 exactly. You are not paying more at the checkout yet

Here is the part most reports skip. None of the devices we checked actually sells at the new recommendation. The Fire TV Stick HD was 26.99 euros, the 4K Select 29.99, the 4K Plus 37.99 and the 4K Max 47.99. The Fire TV Cube came to 129.99 euros, below even its old recommendation of 159.99. The eero 7 three-pack was 319.99 euros. The Kindle Paperwhite stood at 169.99 euros, exactly the figure that was the official recommendation until last week.

What did change instantly is the math printed next to it. Amazon now advertises the Fire TV Stick HD at 26.99 euros as 58 percent off. Against the old recommendation of 44.99 euros it would have been 40 percent. Same price, better looking tag. The Kindle Paperwhite carries a 19 percent discount for a sum that earned you no discount at all two weeks ago.

Why the new number still matters

The trigger is not specific to Amazon. Memory prices have been climbing for months as manufacturers shift capacity toward data centres. We have reported that the memory crunch is now hitting Nvidia, with AI server prices expected to rise by more than 15 percent. The effect has reached the notebook shelf as well, as our review of the HP ZBook Ultra G1a 14 shows, and in the mid-range phone segment entire model lines are disappearing from individual markets. A fixed surcharge for RAM and flash hurts cheap devices hardest in percentage terms, and that is exactly where Amazon's entry-level products sit.

Discounts expire, list prices stay. The new recommendation is the base Amazon will calculate future promotions from, including Black Friday week in November. So when you see an offer, ignore the percentage and look at the amount that actually leaves your account, then compare it with what the device cost in spring.

In practice: if you need a Kindle or a Fire TV Stick anyway, you can still get one at the familiar amount. If you wait, you are waiting for an offer that will look bigger without being cheaper.
