Honor Play
The Honor Play is a smartphone designed for the young and young heart. It has GPU Turbo that brings a dramatically fast and smooth gaming phone experience, which accelerates every touch, every interaction, and even every game. And with the AI NPU (neuron process unit) of Kirin 970, the intelligent gaming and photography give a professional experience. The Honor Play has a full-metal unibody, which is heavily influenced by the design language of the Honor 10. This phone feels even easier to hold in hand though, as unlike the 10 it doesn’t have a glass back, although it is a touch heavier than the Honor 10 at 176 g. This isn’t a particularly large phone considering it has a 6.3-inch screen in its center. That’s because it has a 19.5:9 aspect ratio display with thin bezels around the edges, and that means there’s a notch at the top of the phone to house the front camera and more. Along the bottom edge, there's a USB-C port in the middle, with a 3.5 mm headphone jack and a single speaker to the right. That’s the only speaker on this device, so it won’t sound great if users cover it up. The fingerprint scanner is on the back of this phone, and while it may not look particularly attractive we found the position made it easy to reach and tap. The display itself is just a Full HD+ panel, but the viewing experience is quite impressive. Colors are good and the screen is clear, with a resolution of 409 pixels per inch. This isn't going to be as good a display as those on the Samsung Galaxy Note 9 or S9 family, but it looks great considering the price point. Honor often includes one RGB (color) sensor with another black and white one, with the phone taking an image with both and combining them for a far clearer image. Instead of that, here Honor has included a 16 MP sensor with a f/2.2 aperture, paired with a 2 MP depth sensor. That second sensor is just to allow a user to take bokeh shots as well as enabling a few other smarts on the device's shooter. This isn't likely to give photography that's as good as the Honor 10, but it performed well in good lighting. The Honor Play is powered by 2.36 GHz octa-core (4x 2.36 GHz + 4x 1.8 GHz) processor and it comes with 4 GB of RAM. The phone packs 64 GB of internal storage that can be expanded up to 256 GB via a microSD card. The strong Kirin 970 Chipset introduces an independent AI NPU that makes lots of AI smart applications running faster. It's a powerful chipset that almost rivals Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 845, which is running in a selection of top-end phones, and it ensures a smooth experience when opening up multiple apps on the phone and speedily completing tasks. As a conclusion, Honor is marketing this as a phone for gamers, but the Honor Play is a compelling handset whether users are looking for a gaming phone, or just a phone with a high-end feel, but without a high-end price tag. The first gaming smartphone from Huawei is coming to the western hemisphere: While the Honor Play does not particularly look like a gaming device, it is supposed to impress gamers with its low price. We will take a look at whether this is an advantage or disadvantage and whether the phone offers sufficient power for current games.

The Honor Play joins the rest of the Huawei and Honor family in running EMUI, the company’s Android skin, which skews a little bit closer to iOS than stock Android in some of its design choices, including defaulting to a grid of home screen icons (though the classic Android app drawer is still an option).

I have been very pleased with the Honor Play it is a great value device and will punch well above its weight particularly when gaming is the task at hand. My only real major complaint was that the screen is not good in direct sunlight and is un-usable when wearing glass with polarisation. This is not really a massive problem and is the case for most phones at this and in some case much higher price points.

The Honor Play appears well-designed. It offers a nice look and feel and is enough for mobile gaming. It may not beat the Razer Phone 2 or the ASUS ROG Phone but the Huawei Mate 20’s display offers cool and brighter images.

This phone comes with either 4 or 6GB RAM and 64GB internal storage. You can potentially (if you’re lucky) find it in several different colors. If you’re able to find one, you could find one in Midnight Black, Navy Blue, Violet, Player Edition Red, or Player Edition Black. The version we’ve reviewed here is Player Edition Black.

At £279, it's very easy to recommend the Honor Play. The display is no match for the likes of the Razer Phone or Asus ROG, but the Play offers top notch performance at a far lower price than either of those, which might make it the ideal phone for gamers on a budget.

Moreover, the fact that it sports the Kirin 970 chipset yet costs PHP 15,990, makes the smartphone a great choice for mobile gamers. The Honor Play is truly a quality gaming phone at a very affordable price.

Honor Play is an excellent smartphone that comes very close to matching a premium, flagship smartphone. Of course, it’s not perfect and has the not-so-fluid software. I still feel that Honor has done a great job in cramming a lot of features to make the Honor Play a desirable package.

The Honor Play is a gaming handset with an understated design that the average user will appreciate for its performance, battery life, and a quality display. And gamers? Well, its target audience will enjoy the battery life, the display’s vibrancy, and the gimmicky 4D Smart Shock, and 3D Surround Sound features will certainly add something to the gameplaying experience. If Huawei can get more game developers on board with its GPU Turbo technology, phones such as the Honor Play can only benefit.

Honestly, we’d rather change that phrase to “why should you not buy it?” and we can’t think of a solid reason. While some would nitpick by saying that it has ordinary cameras and a rather boring aluminum unibody, Honor is aware that the main market of the Honor Play is those that are looking for pure performance without spending a fortune.

Honor Play does come loaded with a robust design and display looks impressive as well. The performance and AI in the camera have shown improvement though it sometimes oversaturates some pictures. Overall, considering this price point, the Honor Play surely seems to be an exciting smartphone to consider but it needs to be optimised for the high graphics intensive games, not just the PUBG.

Before I conclude, here is some key information: The Honor Play's big feature, which is GPU Turbo, isn't exclusive to it. Honor will roll it out to existing phones like the Honor 10, Honor View 10, Honor 9 Lite and Honor 7X via a software update. And do understand that the Honor Play is essentially a toned down Honor View 10.

While there’s a lot that impresses, the camera, leaves one wanting more.

As the Honor Play 5T Pro smartphone is not available globally, there’s no such buzz in the smartphone market. If users are limited to just a few brands, this is the final choice. But this is definitely not a phone smartphone enthusiasts would love without google play service. Because of the less powerful chipset, it loses its charm for gamers. You can appreciate the quality of the camera, but you can also get a better option in this price range. Also, battery capacity is not adequate for long battery life. Coming with some decent features, the Honor Play 5T Pro phone doesn’t offer much capacity or satisfaction for smartphone lovers. So, you have alternatives in a similar budget and each brand has its best in this section. So our recommendation is the Honor X20 SE. Recently, Vivo has joined the movement with some of its long-awaited smartphones, like the Vivo Y52.

The Honor Play 5 Youth smartphone is attractive with its 5G network support, extremely slim bezels, 120 Hz refresh rate, and decent chipset for multitasking and gaming. If these features look attractive and you have no problems without Google Play, you can go for the Honor Play 5 Youth smartphone. However, there is no reason to deny that it lacks some modern features like the AMOLED screen, there is no support for NFC and the huge battery capacity could disappoint you at this price point. In addition, the phone does not support Gorilla glass and also has no IP rating. Ignoring these points, the Honor Play5 Youth can be a good smartphone for everyday use. If you are looking for an alternative option you can definitely go for the Vivo T1x smartphone.

The Honor Play 30 Plus smartphone can be a good deal if you look for a bigger battery and stable performance. You will get fast charging support in the mid-range specs along with the 5G connectivity. This phone renders a decent display refresh rate but the only concern here is the average camera, google play support, and some bloatware applications, that might be expected under the Magic UI user interface. In general, although taking pictures is not a highlight, you can use it to record the beauty around you at any time. After experiencing it, the Honor Play 30 Plus has greatly subverted my impression of the thousand yuan 5G entry machine. Especially this battery life makes me amazed. 5000mAh battery capacity is not uncommon, but on the Honor Play 30 Plus, with Honor’s smart power-saving technology, it has achieved record results, more than double the average mobile phone. The battery life is really worthy of the name. What’s more, it also has a 22.5W fast charge to escort the large battery, which greatly shortens the charging time and does not have to wait too long. The rest, such as appearance design and color matching, high-brush full-screen display, and memory expansion, are also good plus points. At the entry-level gear of 1,000 yuan 5G, it can greatly improve the user experience and make the phone run more smoothly. How about it? Does such a wonderful machine with battery life impress you?

The Honor Play 30 Plus smartphone was released in December 2021 at a price of $190 (Rs 14,999 in India) approx. Because it’s a budget 5G device, the company cut corners to maintain that price. For starters, the device arrives with a 6.74-inch IPS LCD panel with a 90Hz refresh rate, which offers HD+ resolution. However, there is no information on the protection of gorilla glass. In terms of design, the phone looks elegant, while Android 11 OS supported by Magic UI 5.0 layers support decent customization. But, as usual, Google’s ecosystem support wouldn’t be there. On the other hand, the phone offers a 7nm – MediaTek MT6833 Dimensity 700 5G chipset that renders 5G support but didn’t feature NFC related stuff. The camera end grants a 13MP primary camera that clubs along with a 2MP depth lens, while a 5MP selfie camera couples up on the screen. In terms of the battery section, the Honor Play 30 Plus equips a 5000 mAh battery that also introduces a 22.5W fast charging support. There are color variants of Black, Blue, Silver, and Gold from which you can pick anyone you like.

Honor Play 6T Pro smartphone is a great example of what a company can go up to the extent to create an affordable 5G phone. The phone might not have the best photo or video recording experience. But on the other hand, if you are in search of an all-rounder deal, you can check out the Redmi Note 11 Pro smartphone. It got the best camera, performance, battery, and display. But for this, you have to slightly increase your budget. In the end, it’s your money, so pick anything that you liked.

After reviewing all of the aspects of the Honor Play 30 smartphone, we conclude that this phone is an average deal in the entry-level segment. You will find several other options in the budget segment that will provide more value for money with the Google service ecosystem. But if we have to recommend this phone, we only do for 5G connectivity, performance, battery, and storage. Apart from those factors, there’s no news of when the company will release this phone outside of China. Instead, you can check out alternative smartphone options such as the Tecno Spark 9T for better features and specs but you have to compromise the 5G connectivities.
