Black, stylish, fast. HP launches a very compact and thin 15.6-inch gaming notebook with the Omen, which has a very good design and attracts gamers with powerful core components. The price of 1,600 Euros (~$1793) comes with high expectations for the ergonomics and the performance, but not all of them can be fulfilled.

HP might market this as a gaming machine, and it’s great for those of you who want a mobile gaming laptop rather than a custom built desktop PC, but as with many of the gaming notebooks that we’ve seen over the years, we think that it should also tickle the fancy of anyone who just wants a powerful luxury notebook.

HP Omen 15-5001na
Slim yet powerful, the HP Omen 15 not only packs a lot of powerful hardware as a "Gaming" laptop, but looks awesome to boot. Right out of the box, the sleek black aluminum cover with splashes of red is a classic combination that looks gorgeous on the Omen 15. At under 2 cm thick, the Omen 15 is definitely one of the thinner laptops made as a desktop replacement. Its weight of 2.1 kg allows it to be portable without being back breaking. The display is a cool 15.6 inch with 1920 x 1080 resolution LED backlit touch screen, which works great with the bundled Windows 8.1 OS. When it comes to gaming laptops, the hardware takes priority over looks, and the Omen 15 doesn't disappoint. It comes with a powerful combo of Intel i7 processors and top of the line Nvidia GTX 860M graphics card that is meant to run the most beautiful games the market has to offer. The 8GB RAM is decent, though it is recommended to upgrade to 16 GB or higher. The Omen comes with 2 separate speakers at the front that compliments gaming with its immersive surround sound. It also comes with a 256 GB Solid State Drive, which loads data much faster compared to conventional hard disk.Specifications

The HP Omen is a good gaming laptop for the price, but it's not quite great. For $1,029, gamers get a moderately attractive notebook that offers fairly strong performance. Where the laptop really shines is its almost 7 hours of battery life. However, for $999, you can get the Asus ROG GL552, which offers a sleeker design, a more colorful screen, a speedier SSD and better overall performance.

The shiny touchscreen is a pointless ostentation raising price and weight besides sapping power, and network connectivity is limited. Otherwise the HP Omen 15 is a nicely built, stylish and speedy gaming laptop.

Whether you’re a CS:GO type or a WarCraft junkie, having a few programmable keys by your left hand is a feature you’re going to miss the next time you play on different machine. As we mentioned earlier, we're less impressed by the Omen 15's extra-wide trackpad, as we're not likely to use it, but we can see the appeal for various applications and usage models.

For a first gaming laptop, this is a high quality product from HP. On top of its striking chassis and decent screen, its configuration is good enough to support a wide variety of games in the screen's native resolution. The main downsides are the quality of the speakers and the rather feeble battery life, which make its price seem a little ambitious. You'll find better alternatives in the same price range from HP's competitors.

The Omen 15 has all the ingredients of a gaming laptop evolved for modern times. It's thin, lightweight, and packed with powerful components in every corner, from its "Haswell" processor and "Maxwell" GPU to its stacks of RAM and PCIe-based SSD. Our only real complaint with the configuration is that HP doesn't offer a GPU upgrade—we're already dreaming of this machine with a GTX 970M option.

The HP Omen is easily the best-looking laptop of the year, combining a tempting design with a healthy dose of gaming might. However, at $2,099, the Omen's keyboard could use some work, and its speakers a little more oomph. For $400 less, the MSI GS60 Ghost delivers on all fronts, has comparable performance and is lighter.

We're shocked and thrilled that HP has returned to the gaming laptop scene with one of the most attractive, thin and light 15" machines on the market. The look and build quality are Voodoo level boutique. The 1080p touchscreen makes working in Windows 8.1 and touch-aware games like Civ V enjoyable, though glare is an issue.

With its midrange price, the HP Omen 15 pits itself against some potent competitors. While it easily outstrips the entry-level gaming rigs from other mainstream manufacturers, like Acer and Lenovo, this model is priced to compete with systems from gaming specialists, like Digital Storm and Maingear. In that comparison, the Omen 15 does fairly well, with solid performance and a gamer-friendly design. But more expensive systems from boutique vendors still win the day, thanks to better gaming performance.

Anyone counting HP out of the picture over the past year or two is going to be surprised by how well the high-end Omen comes together. It's especially gratifying to see a decent gaming machine come from HP after the company failed to capitalize on buying the well-liked Voodoo PC gaming company back in 2006.

The Omen may not be the most powerful notebook out there, but it’s extremely polished and well-designed. Everything from its looks, portability, and thermals are top notch. While our decked-out unit cost $2,100, if you’re looking for a more affordable configuration, we recommend going with the $1,800 model, which includes a 512GB SSD, 8GB of RAM, and an 860M with 2GB of VRAM. It’s still a pretty good Omen.

Overall HP's new gaming laptop is one worthy of the Omen name. It offers bags of style and reasonable gaming performance in a thin and fairly cool chassis. Decked out with the larger 4GB of GPU RAM, 16GB of RAM and 512GB of SSD storage, it's even reasonably priced at $2,100 compared to other notebooks in its class.

In our tests, the HP Omen 15 proves itself as a decent option for gamers yearning to be different from the throng buying Alienware, Razer, and the like. There are still some things HP could do to improve the machine, with a better battery life and a screen with less noticeable flicker, but if you’re stuck to the desk and are lucky enough not to see the refresh rate issues (or consequently, if HP fixes them), the Omen is definitely a machine worth taking a look at.

The HP Omen strives to be stylish and versatile, and while it does pull that off completely, it sometimes feels as though too much attention was paid to those aspects of design and not enough to core usability. We think the balance of gaming power and portability is just right - you can carry the Omen around and get all your day-to-day work done as well. It isn't the most comfortable laptop for that purpose, but it will make heads turn.

HP Omen is priced at Rs 1,59,990 and even by gaming laptop standards, the price is on the higher side. But then again, HP Omen does not look like any other gaming laptop. And this design will certainly command a premium pricing. A quick look online, will give you gaming laptops with a better graphics solution at a lesser price such as MSI GE62 or the Asus G751JL and so on. At the price of the HP Omen, you could even get a higher end laptop and a PlayStation 4. So the HP Omen is clearly targetted at a niche segment for whom along with performance, even the looks are important.

HP marks their entry back into the gaming laptop arena with the Omen 15 that offers a solid gaming performance in a relatively thin and light profile. It even packs in a touchscreen which many other gaming systems do not have. The system is marred by a number of design choices such as an unusual keyboard and trackpad layout that might require getting used to and ports that are out of the way that make them somewhat more difficult to use.

The Omen attracts attention with its smart design and a build that’s slimmer and thinner than rivals. With reasonable gaming power and a well-balanced specification elsewhere, it’s a system where style is as important as substance. HP Omen 15-ax008ng
Designed to look fierce yet sleek and with performance capabilities to match, the HP Omen 15-ax008ng certainly draws heads. The matte black lid from carbon fiber is highlighted with the blood red Omen emblem. Edges are curved and the discreet hinge design is surprisingly rigid and smooth at the same time. There is a full sized chiclet style keyboard with red backlight, which enhances viewing in low light. Display on the HP Omen 15-ax008ng is a 15.6 inch UHD IPS panel with WLED backlight technology. Performance is reasonably impressive, yet having to fork out just over £1,000 for a high-end device, I'd expect a little bit more under the hood. The similarly priced Gigabyte P55Wv5 has the same processor and 16GB of RAM too, yet the Nvidia GeForce GTX 970 graphics chip is far superior to the GTX 965M found inside the Omen 15. That makes it a better choice if you’re looking for a laptop that can handle almost anything you throw at it.

The build quality has taken a drastic turn, compared to last year’s model, yet it still in line what the current industry offers and our only complaint is still in the input device section. The keyboard doesn’t feel optimized for gaming while the touchpad is again too stiff and unsatisfying. Perhaps the lowered chassis quality has given a headroom for the engineers to integrate more powerful hardware and that’s more than welcomed change. Not to mention the spotless cooling system that handled all that heat with ease.

The HP Omen 17 offers high-end gaming and VR performance in a portable package for less than $2,000, and it looks good doing so. The notebook’s GTX 1070 GPU is more than ready for the latest blockbuster games and rich VR experiences, and its Core i7 processor and speedy SSD make it an excellent multitasking machine. Despite how huge it is, the Omen has a slick, understated look that’s refreshing compared to the machine’s aggressive-looking competitors.

HP Omen 17-w101ng
The HP Omen 17-w101ng is a powerful and high-performance laptop built specifically for gamers. The laptop measures at 41.6 x 27.9 x 30 mm and weighs at 3.35 kg. This is definitely not thin or light but it is good enough for a serious gaming laptop. In terms of design, it looks simple and smart. Apart from its red illuminated logo which is on the lid, it hardly passes as a gaming laptop when looked at. The same can be said when the lid is open. The red lighting extends to the keyboard's backlight but that is all. It doesn't have any lighting around its trackpad or crazy illuminated vents on the back of the laptop to shout gaming. On the other hand, its inside strongly suggests that this is a serious gaming laptop. It features very high hardware configurations such as an Intel Core i7 processor, 16 GB DDR4 RAM and a dedicated Nvidia GeForce GTX 1060 graphic processor with 6 GB GDDR5 VRAM for running heavy graphics. With these latest hardware specification built into the laptop, it can achieve top performance on games, multimedia content or productive work environment. As for storage, the HP Omen 17-w101ng is comes with a 128 GB M.2 SSD and 1 TB 7200 rpm SATA hard disk drive. The hybrid storage system is capable of achieving both faster boot up from the solid state disk and large storage size from the conventional hard disk drive for storing games, documents, multimedia files or other programs. The display of the laptop is a 17.3-inch (43.9 cm) FHD IPS display. This allows comfortable working environment even with multiple open windows. Anti-glare coating prevents reflections very well, which is suitable for gamers on the go. Moreover, colors are very accurate with saturation kept at a very good level. The keyboard in this laptop is a full-size island-style backlit keyboard with a numeric keypad. The key travel is deep enough and the keyboard itself is good enough for gaming. This is mainly possible due to its size and thickness. The HP Imagepad with multi-touch gesture support is the same kind of units found in other HP models. It is good enough for normal usage but is outperformed by many other gaming laptops' trackpad. Like most of HP laptops these days, the HP Omen 17-w101ng is equipped with quad HP speakers, which are tuned by Bang & Olufsen and HP Audio Boost. Its speakers are placed on top of the keyboard, which means clearer sound can be produced since the speakers are not covered. For the operating system, the HP Omen 17-w101ng runs on Windows 10 Home 64-bit. As for connectivity, it features integrated 10/100/1000 Gigabit Ethernet LAN and an Intel 802.11ac (2x2) Wi-Fi and Bluetooth 4.2 combo, which is Miracast compatible. Its 6-cell 95.8 Wh lithium ion battery is capable of delivering up to 15 hours of battery life according to HP. The Omen 17-w101ng is a good gaming laptop but for its price, there are many other alternatives from other gaming laptop manufacturers such as Alienware, Acer, MSI, and Asus. Omen meets Pascal. After other manufacturers of high-end laptops already equipped their systems with the latest Nvidia GPU generation, HP now follows with the Omen series and launches a gaming machine for an appealing price. But is the price-performance ratio right? We will find out.

HP has a solid entry into the high-end gaming notebook market with the new Omen 17. This 17.3-incher has excellent gaming performance, and it cranks your game frames with minimal heat and noise. Its revised cooling system is well-equipped to handle its Nvidia GTX 1070 chip and Intel Core i7-6700HQ quad-core processor. However, the HP’s native 4K screen resolution was a little too high for even the GTX 1070 to handle with maxed-out details in leading-edge games. The display scales down to 1080p rather well, but we’d really like to see a 1440p display offered to make the most of this card.

Despite the sedate style, the simple truth with the Omen 17 is that you’re getting top-of-the-line performance at a pretty good price. Our review model, for example, with its GTX 1070, quad-core CPU, 16GB of DDR4/2133 RAM, 256GB SSD, and 4K G-sync panel is $1,800. To get those parts in a 17-inch laptop from other vendors might cost you another $200 to $400. Of course, those other vendors will give you a more aggressive look, more flashing lights and more bling, but is it really worth it? That’s ultimately up to you. As it stands, the Omen 17 is hella fast and a hella good deal.

All, I think that the HP Omen 17 may not be the most attention-grabbing gaming laptop around, but for those who don’t mind the looks, this gaming notebook should definitely be considered. Not only is it ‘portable’, it also packs a beast of a graphics card. If you are looking for a more exuberant gaming notebook that constantly screams for attention, you may want to look elsewhere.
Positive: Powerful hardware; solid workmanship; decent speakers; comfortable keyboard. Negative: Only 1 color backlit; relatively thick and heavy; no optical drive.

Still, for gaming, you'll probably want to hook up an external keyboard or at least a mouse when you can. The Omen has three USB 3.0 ports with one on the left and two on the right. Also on the left are separate mic and headphone jacks joined on the right by an SD card reader, Ethernet jack and HDMI and Mini DisplayPort outputs.

Well-balanced. At a purchase price of almost 1300 Euros (~$1390), the Omen 17 w100ng is presently the cheapest device within its lineup. This slightly lower-performance model also renders games smoothly on its matte Full HD panel. The Omen offers a very good battery life for a gaming laptop.

We expect luxury machines from the Omen brand, but this laptop hasn’t quite delivered. It’s got the pace and the media chops, sure, but it’s thick, heavy, with a lack of software and underwhelming ergonomics. Those issues see it fall into mediocre territory – and that means it doesn’t live up to its Omen billing.

HP’s Omen brand is supposed to represent the last word in luxury and high-end gaming performance, but I’m a little underwhelmed by this machine. It’s fast, sure, but it doesn’t have the extra touches that I expect from a pricey gaming laptop. With all of that said, if you're looking for the cheapest GTX 1070 laptop on the market and are happy to put up with the compromises outlined above, this is a fine gaming laptop.

HP’s Omen 17-w106na remains, though, a strange beast. There’s no questioning its abilities as a VR-ready gaming powerhouse. It’ll handle almost any task thrown at it - whether that’s a media editor or a next-gen game.

Aside from putting in a GTX 1070, there really isn’t much about this laptop that would attract the “gaming” label. Performance wise, the HP Omen 17 does take a few steps back because of the older CPU but when it comes to gaming it decimates practically most of the competition.

HP Omen 17-w216ng
While it's uncommon to hear HP and gaming in one sentence as of late this isn’t such the case. With the recent booming gaming notebook scene it is only natural HP would try to cater to such user’s with the introduction of the Omen line and the HP Omen 17-w216ng. Because HP is new to the gaming notebook market one can understand if HP’s design choices aren’t as grand as Dell’s Alienware but at the very least the Omen 17 seems to have a more humanly design. It sports a clean matte black chassis with HP's Omen log on the top. But don’t let its look discourage you as it is sure packing under the hood. Beginning with its bread and butter the Omen 17 is loaded with Intel’s latest 7th gen Core i7-7700HQ, 8 GB of RAM, a combo 1 TB hard disk and 128 GB of SSD storage along with its main firepower the Nvidia Geforce GTX1070 graphics processor. Being 17.3 inch big, it's surprisingly light for its size tipping the scales at 3.4 kg which should help those travelling gamers out there. Although it cannot be said the same for its display, while a standard FHD IPS panel would have been great for anything 15-inch and below, a 4K is an absolute must for a notebook of this size, although one might worry that the GPU might suffer that wouldn’t be the case since HP has taken the liberty to equip the Omen 17 with a Nvidia Geforce GTX 1070 which by all accounts is certified 4K ready. In terms of audio hardware, the Omen 17 is equipped with 4 Bang & Olufsen certified speakers, which delivers an excellent listening experience although an included subwoofer for a notebook of this size would have been more than a welcomed addition. Nonetheless sound quality remains great. Moving along to user inputs, HP has made use of their business notebook acumen to create an exceptional typing experience on the keyboard, the keyboard has a reasonable amount of key travel, which actually gives confidence to users while typing. Apart from that the keyboard also includes backlighting for those night owl gamers out there. Because this is a gaming notebook, HP has also taken the liberty to include an Omen branded mouse as part of the package despite not being the best mice out there, it still proves decent. In summary: If you are looking for a reasonably hassle-free gaming notebook the HP Omen 17 might actually be a good choice. The HP Omen 17 is certainly a new generation gaming laptop. It packs the power for serious gaming but has a more clean, sleek look rather than the usual bulky, alien-like design. Hands-on article by Jagadisa RajarathnamSpecifications

Finally, HP has made an excellent gaming laptop that’s worth considering and virtually has no serious drawbacks, except the usual ones that are intrinsic to almost all gaming notebooks – short battery life and heavy construction.

Despite some of its drawbacks, the HP Omen 17 (GTX 1070) makes it to our recommendation list as it has some few strong selling points that need to be considered. Unfortunately, build quality, feel and input devices are not one of them. The lid feels flimsy, the keyboard offers short key travel (and it’s not optimized for gaming) and the touchpad appears to be cheaply made. We’ve criticized the ASUS ROG GL702VS for its lack of premium materials but it still came to be sturdy while the same cannot be said about HP’s Omen 17.

If you are looking for a good gaming laptop, then this must be in your shortlist. Since gamers are very choosy, the final pick will depend on what your gut tell you, but when it comes to experience and performance, you should not really bother much about what the Omen can do. Can this take on the Alienware? Yes. But can it win? That the gamers will tell you better.

We really hoped that if HP is charging so much for the Omen 15, it would offer at least slightly better user experience than the general competition. However, the Omen 15 not only doesn’t impress with build, performance or display quality, it drags behind its rivals in most aspects.

Changeling. The Omen series from HP is not only known for its relatively good price-performance ratio, but also for its unique appearance. Thanks to a redesign in mid-2017, the gaming notebooks appear in a completely new light. In our test, you can find out what else has changed.

If you wouldn’t mind abandoning G-Sync and downgrading your CPU to a Core i5, the Inspiron 15 7000 Gaming also packs a GTX 1060 Max-Q. It’s a great value at $980 on Dell.com. Microcenter’s homebrew PowerSpec 1510, on the other hand, only costs $1,200 and packs a more potent GTX 1070 with G-Sync. It’s a classic big, heavy gaming laptop though, and G-Sync is quietly disabled by default (and enabling it is a convoluted hassle). Also, the PowerSpec 1510 can only be picked up in-store at physical Microcenter locations.

For the intended purposes, though, the Omen 15 serves its purpose better than expected. It’s not a performance record-breaker nor a slim and svelte traveling companion, but if you want to get your Mass Effect on at a semi-reasonable price and don’t mind looking like you stepped out of the ’80s, it’s not a bad choice.

If you want something cheaper, another option is the $1,099.99 Acer Predator, which also offers a GTX 1060 and easy upgradability, making it a bargain. The new HP Omen 15 proves that one generation is enough to drastically change our minds about the series. HP has definitely done its homework this time around and there aren’t any apparent issues with the model like before. Build quality is good, the updated design of the input devices makes them usable and we are impressed by its portability for a 15-inch gaming laptop with GTX 1060. We are also pretty happy with the fact that the price hasn’t been altered as much. That’s true, of course, about the GTX 1050 Ti configurations but what about the new GTX 1060 Max-Q Design variant that we reviewed?

Republic of Gamers. Aorus. Alienware. And now we have another major manufacturer launching its own dedicated gaming brand, with HP making a serious push with its Omen range. It actually launched last year, but it’s only this year that we’ve seen how serious the company is about developing a dedicated gaming series. Part of this range is the new Omen 15 gaming laptop, which we spent several days playing with.

Intel Core i7: The Intel Core i7 for laptops is based on the LG1156 Core i5/i7 CPU for desktops. The base clock speed of the CPUs is relatively low, but because of a huge Turbo mode, the cores can dynamically overclock to up to 3.2 GHz (920XM). Therefore, the CPU can be as fast as high clocked dual-core CPUs (using single threaded applications) but still offer the advantage of 4 cores. Because of the large TDP of 45 W / 55 W, the CPU is only intended for large laptops.
