Grand Seiko looks inside its Ginza boutique for inspiration for its latest Wako exclusive
Grand Seiko’s latest Wako-exclusive limited edition takes design inspiration from the tiled pillars inside its Ginza boutique, translating their interplay of light and shadow into a textured gray dial. The 150-piece individually numbered watch is powered by a 72-hour Spring Drive movement.

Grand Seiko is adding another Japan-exclusive release to its lineup with the SBGA531, a limited-edition watch made exclusively for Wako, the iconic department store in Tokyo’s Ginza district and home to the Grand Seiko Flagship Boutique. This is the second Wako-exclusive release of the year, and it joins the 100-piece ivory-dialled SBGA519 that arrived back in May.

Quite interestingly, the creative inspiration for the latest model came from within Wako’s own walls. The dial’s heavily textured charcoal-gray finish is actually inspired by the custom Mino ware tiled pillars found in the cozy lounge of Grand Seiko’s flagship boutique on the second floor.

The gray dial is accented by a navy blue vapor deposition ring surrounding the inner edge of the crystal and features a blue power reserve indicator near eight o’clock, and a gold-toned applied GS logo beneath the twelve o'clock marker. The sapphire case back features a see-through design printed with a gold lion emblem, a "WAKO LIMITED COLLECTION" inscription, and an engraved serial number.

Like the landmark 40th Wako exclusive model released in May (SBGA519), the watch’s 40mm stainless steel case is a modern interpretation of the 44GS case, a design that helped establish the brand’s “Grand Seiko Style,” and is meticulously finished with the signature Zaratsu polishing, creating flawlessly smooth, distortion-free mirror surfaces that sharply contrast with delicate brushed hairlines. The watch is supplied with a stainless steel bracelet and brown crocodile leather strap featuring a navy cowhide lining.

Tiled pillars that inspired the texture of the SBGA531’s dial.

The SBGA531 is powered by Seiko’s 9R65 Spring Drive caliber, offering a 72-hour power reserve and an average accuracy of ±15 seconds per month. For starters, the proprietary Spring Drive, introduced in 2004 for Grand Seiko, operates as a mechanical-quartz hybrid. It uses a traditional mainspring as its sole power source, but smartly replaces the standard mechanical escapement with an advanced quartz oscillator. This hybrid approach provides the autonomy of a mechanical watch with quartz-like accuracy. Most notably, it gives the seconds hand its signature, exceptionally smooth sweep across the dial.

Pricing & Availability

You’ll have to fly to Japan to get your hands on the new Grand Seiko Heritage Wako Limited Edition, though. Priced at ¥869,000 (~$5,655) and limited to just 150 individually numbered pieces, it’s set to go on sale exclusively at the Grand Seiko Flagship Boutique in Ginza on October 8. Reservations began September 10 and are available in person only.
