Google reveals Pixel 8a mid-range smartphone before rumoured mid-May release
It appears that Google has revealed its next mid-range smartphone ahead of its official release. To recap, the company confirmed almost a month ago that this year's I/O conference would commence on May 14. Subsequently, the Federal Communications Commission (FCC) published multiple listings for unreleased Pixel smartphones that were all relatives of each other.
With all that in mind, a relatively unknown YouTuber appeared to catch Google advertising its Fi Wireless service using two Pixel 8a handsets. Although the company has returned to using the Pixel 8 Pro, the design of the devices picked above and below matches Pixel 8a retail packaging that leaked in January. Consequently, the device has two rear-facing cameras sat within a relatively thin camera housing that lacks the microphone hole present on the Pixel 8.
Based on earlier leaks, the two colours shown are 'Bay' and 'Porcelain', which should be joined by 'Mint' and 'Obsidian'. Moreover, Kamila Wojciechowska claimed that the Pixel 8a contains a 120 Hz display, which would be a first for the Pixel A series. Similarly, the Pixel 8a is said to feature a Google Tensor G3 chipset, up to 256 GB of storage and even DisplayPort Alt Mode support. For reference, the latter should tie in with Google's new desktop mode, a short video of which recently surfaced online too.
