US-based accessory maker Genki had the limelight at CES 2025 for showing off a Nintendo Switch 2 mockup that was allegedly based on the real gaming handheld. But now, Genki admits that the mockup was based on leaks.

Genki, a US-based gaming peripheral manufacturer, made it to the headlines for showing off a Nintendo Switch 2 mockup at CES 2025 that was allegedly based on the real gaming handheld. The accessory maker boasted about having access to the original device, but now the manufacturer is taking back the claims it made during the event.

During an interview with the Japanese gaming site Game*Spark on January 10, a representative from Genki admitted that no one from the company had seen the actual device. Instead, the mockup and all the details shared by the accessory maker during CES 2025 were based on leaks that were circulating within the industry.

This confession came right after Nintendo told CNET Japan that the company didn't give Genki early access to its upcoming gaming handheld. Of course, Genki isn't the only accessory maker who is making such wild claims. There have been a ton of Switch 2 accessories leaks in the past few weeks, and some of the sources claimed the same.

Another thing to note is that while Genki exaggerated the authenticity of its Nintendo Switch 2 mockup, it doesn't mean that the mockup shown at CES 2025 doesn't resemble the real device at all. As the company official said, it was based on the leaks that have been circulating in the industry, and some of the aspects of the mockup match what the past reports have shared.

For example, the mysterious "C" button is present on the mockup, and it also shows the U-shaped kickstand. But, yes, there's no guarantee that the past reports were accurate. What's certain, though, is that Switch 2 is over the horizon, as Nintendo is set to announce it before March 2025.
