GeForce MX230 offers fewer shader cores but faster clock rates than the GeForce MX130

Our first benchmarks for the Nvidia MX230 show decent performance upgrades over the MX130 of up to 30 percent in 3DMark benchmarks. Shader count is identical to the MX110, but the newer Pascal architecture still manages to deliver faster performance.

After testing out the new GeForce MX250, now is the time to see what the GeForce MX230 is capable of. When compared to the outgoing Maxwell-based GeForce MX130, the MX230 finally makes to the jump to Pascal for higher performance-per-Watt. We can also observe faster boost clock rates (1531 MHz vs. 1189 MHz) over the previous generation between our two Asus samples as shown by our GPU-Z screenshots below.

3DMark 11 and Cloud Gate benchmarks reveal the MX230 to be about 20 to 30 percent faster than the MX130 in the Asus VivoBook 15. Interestingly, this performance gap closes when running more demanding benchmarks like Fire Strike to imply that the MX230 works best on less demanding titles. It may end up being the go-to GPU for popular multiplayer titles like Rocket League, DOTA 2, or Fortnite as a result.

Overall performance is still much slower than the last generation MX150 by about 20 to 30 percent on average. Even the 10 W MX150 Max-Q in last year's MateBook X Pro is able to outperform the MX230 by up to 22 percent.

The MX230 is identified by the Device ID '1D11' in contrast to the '1D13' MX250. Expect our full review on the Asus VivoBook 14 with GeForce MX230 graphics soon.
