Garmin users get a new coaching option
Even without an expensive subscription, Garmin device owners now have a new way to evaluate and, more importantly, manage their training. The new open‑source Cycling-Coach can be customized to individual preferences, so users aren't constrained by rigid or unsuitable preset assumptions.

Garmin already offers several ways to analyze and structure training sessions or even entire training phases through intelligent tools in Garmin Connect, which also provides a range of personalization options. Now, a new community-driven open-source project has emerged, offering a promising alternative for coaching cycling workouts without requiring Garmin Connect+. Because it’s open source, it’s free to use in principle and can also be modified. The developer, Budget‑Baker‑9063, highlights one key feature in particular: configuration changes don't require digging into the source code. Instead, the system stores various parameters in Markdown files, allowing users to tweak how aspects like recovery are handled.

Cycling-Coach processes training data from Intervals.icu, enabling smart workout planning. Users can design their own periodized training plans, choosing between different periodization models, while the system evaluates the feasibility of scheduled sessions. Planned workouts can then be synced directly to compatible wearables via Intervals.icu. Integration with large language models (LLMs) is a central feature, with Google AI Studio among the supported platforms. Interaction takes place conveniently through a Telegram bot. Installation is not completely turnkey but is documented.
