Earlier this month, Garmin announced its August 2025 Feature Update out of the blue with various changes for recent devices like the Forerunner 570, Forerunner 970 and Venu X1, as well as the Fenix 8 and its peers. Also included was the Edge 1050 (curr. $689.99 on Amazon), which was the only cycling computer mentioned in Garmin's latest Feature Update.
For context, the company claimed that the Edge 1050 would receive Forksight Mode improvements, as well as 5Hz GPS recording, Timing Gates and new Ride profiles. At the time, it was unclear whether Garmin would bring any of these new features to older cycling computers like the Edge 1040. As it turns out, all of these have been skipped over entirely with new updates for the Edge 540, Edge 840 and Edge 1040.
Confusingly, Garmin has offered Series Version 28.20 to all its currently supported cycling computers, including the Edge 1050. While the four cycling computers have received the same software version, Garmin has included eight more changes for the Edge 1050. Nonetheless, the older Edge 540, Edge 840 and Edge 1040 have gained three new features with Series Version 28.20 and several other bug fixes.
