The Anbernic RG DS has begun shipping to those who pre-ordered, and while Anbernic has released a software update that fixes some major issues noticed by early backers, owners can opt for another operating system entirely. That operating system is GammaOS Next which has now been released for the RG DS.
According to Retro Handhelds, the build of GammaOS released for the RG DS is based on the same version (1.1.0) that was released in late November for other Anbernic handhelds such as the RG405M, RG405V (available on Amazon for $159.99), and RG505. Built on top of Android 14/LineageOS 21, the software brings features such as a Global Shader Pipeline, an immersive mode, faster boot times, GammaEQ audio equalizer, improved task switcher, and reduced rendering latency, etc.
In addition, it also fixes the issues that plagued the Anbernic RG DS such as the 40Hz bug and the secondary screen latency. As stated above, these issues have been fixed by Anbernic in its own update too, but it also means that those who install GammaOS won't experience these bugs. The source also mentions that GammaOS has added true multitasking support, so the system won't pause apps. It has also fixed the sleep mode as Deep Sleep is now enabled by default.
This version of GammaOS is reported to be available only to content creators and reviewers, but it is only a matter of time before a public build is available. Nevertheless, there's a video preview you can watch showing the operating system in use and the new features it brings to the Anbernic RG DS.
