Although Samsung's official update policy suggests that the Galaxy S20 series is only eligible to receive quarterly security patches three years after launch, the former flagship smartphones are still being updated on a monthly basis, which is a pleasant surprise for Android users who are still holding onto their beloved device.

Software updates are somewhat of a controversial topic for many users of Android smartphones, especially since the corresponding update policies of the most notable manufacturers can differ quite dramatically. Fortunately, the South Korean tech behemoth Samsung has become a frontrunner in this regard, and now there are even more good news for Galaxy S20 Ultra owners who have not upgraded yet.

As noted by the German tech website Teltarif and other outlets, the over three-year-old handsets are still receiving monthly Android security patches at this point, which does not correspond to Samsung’s very own update policy. Officially, the Galaxy S20, S20 Plus and S20 Ultra are scheduled to receive just one software update every quarter after March 2023, but the smartphones' security patches for April, May and June 2023 have already been rolled out in most regions.

Therefore, Samsung is exceeding its update promise, which has been improved a few years ago and now guarantees five years of security patches for many smartphones from 2021 onwards, such as the current Galaxy S23. On the other hand, the Galaxy S20 Ultra and its smaller cousins are still part of the previous update schedule, which included just four years of software support. It remains to be seen whether this better-than-expected interval of security patches foreshadows another improvement of Samsung’s update policy, which could for example apply to the last entry in the beloved Galaxy Note series that is also approaching its final year of software support.
