The Fairphone 4 has been around for nearly 18 months now, with Fairphone releasing the Snapdragon 750G on October 25 after a September 30 announcement. Hence, it should come as no surprise to learn that Fairphone has been preparing a replacement, which appears to be in the first stages of development. As usual, Fairphone has created the Fairphone 5 with sustainability in mind, unlike its peers.
Thus, the Fairphone 5 retains a user-replaceable battery, beneath which sit MicroSD card and SIM card trays. Presumably, Fairphone will offer spares for other parts, such as a modular USB Type-C port. While technical details remain unknown at this stage, Fairphone has decided to maintain the Fairphone 4's triangular camera housing. Likewise, Fairphone will continue to populate the camera housing with two cameras, an LED flash module and a time of flight (ToF) sensor.
Fairphone has made some visual changes between the Fairphone 4 and Fairphone 5, though. For example, the latter has a small cut-out for a front-facing camera rather than a waterdrop notch. Additionally, leaked renders suggest that the Fairphone 5 has thinner display bezels than its predecessor too. Other details like a release date and pricing have not emerged yet, although Android Authority expects the Fairphone 5 to debut within the next few months at the latest.
