According to a reliable leaker, Google plans to shake up the display its offers in its flagship smartphones with the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro. Reputedly, Google's smaller flagship will finally adopt a 120 Hz panel, among other changes from the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro.

Kamila Wojciechowska has shared new details about the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro, having outlined various camera specifications about the pair a little over a week ago. Allegedly, a 'source inside Google' has revealed display differences between the Pixel 7 and Pixel 8 series, which extend beyond a move to flat panels that CAD-based renders highlighted earlier this year.

As the image below summarises, the Pixel 8 will feature more display changes than the Pixel 8 Pro compared to their predecessors. In short, the Pixel 8 has a brighter, faster, smaller and more pixel-dense display than the Pixel 7. Additionally, the Pixel 8 will be capable of dropping its display refresh rate to 10 Hz, which should reduce power consumption in some scenarios. Reportedly, Google has tested Pixel 8 with BOE and Samsung Display panels, with the latter used exclusively across recent Pixel smartphone series.

Wojciechowska is unsure whether Google will source BOE and Samsung Display panels for the Pixel 8, though. By contrast, the Pixel 8 Pro will only come with Samsung Display panels. Likewise, it will maintain a 120 Hz refresh rate, albeit with a wider variable refresh rate, which can cycle between 5 Hz, 10 Hz, 30 Hz and 60-120 Hz. The Pixel 8 Pro will have a 60% higher peak brightness than the Pixel 7 Pro but with a nominally lower resolution. Wojciechowska adds that the Pixel 8 and Pixel 8 Pro will have 102 px and 115 px corner radii too, up from 47 px and 50 px for the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro, respectively. Hence, the Pixel 8 series will also contain rounder corners than last year's models.
