Fossil hints that Snapdragon Wear 3100 and Snapdragon Wear 4100 smartwatches could receive Wear OS 3 before Google Pixel Watch release
Fossil's official Twitter account has shed some light on the whereabouts of Wear OS 3, an operating system that debuted as One UI Watch with the Samsung Galaxy Watch4 series. As a recap, Google announced in July 2021 that it expected its partners 'to be able to roll out the system update [Wear OS 3] in mid to second half of 2022'. While neither Google nor its partners have commented on the matter since, Fossil suggests that plans remain on track.
According to Fossil, Wear OS 3 should be available generally towards the end of the month, or by July at the latest. If that proves the case, then the Fossil Gen 6 will taste Wear OS 3 before Google releases the Pixel Watch, which will not arrive until the autumn. Presumably, this release window will also apply to the Skagen Falster Gen 6, TicWatch E3 and the TicWatch Pro 3 series, which all rely on the same Snapdragon Wear 4100 platform as the Fossil Gen 6. It is unclear which version of Wear OS 3 will be available, though. Currently, Samsung is beta testing Wear OS 3.5, with Wear OS 3.1 at the heart of stable builds for the Galaxy Watch4 and Galaxy Watch4 Classic.
Strangely, Fossil added that the Gen 5 series is in line for Wear OS 3, despite relying on the older Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform. Although Google has not explicitly ruled out bringing Wear OS 3 to Snapdragon Wear 3100, last summer's announcement implied that only Snapdragon Wear 4100-powered smartwatches would be eligible. However, Qualcomm claimed that the Snapdragon Wear 3100 platform is capable of supporting Wear OS 3, so the Fossil Gen 5 could still receive Google's latest smartwatch OS yet.
