Recently, Square Enix revealed that the Final Fantasy Remake trilogy would drop its PS5 exclusivity. That led to expectations that the final part of the series may be available on day one for multiple platforms. During the Tokyo Game Show, Square Enix director Naoki Hamaguchi discussed the publisher’s strategy to avoid delays with Easy Allies.
Previous games remained locked to the PS5 before receiving PC ports. However, on January 22, 2026, Final Fantasy 7 Remake Intergrade will debut on the Switch 2 and Xbox consoles. Rumors have also hinted that Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth will come to these systems before the end of 2026. Meanwhile, cross-platform development is also underway for the untitled Final Fantasy Remake Part 3.
Excited fans may be able to enjoy the Square Enix games without long waits. Still, concerns exist about how the company can develop the titles simultaneously. According to Hamaguchi, a separate team has been assigned to Final Fantasy 7 Rebirth for the Switch 2. Meanwhile, another team has set its focus on Final Fantasy Remake Part 3. The conclusion of the trilogy has developers tasked with optimizing the game for each platform.
The difficulties of porting Final Fantasy 7 to every platform
As Hamaguchi admits, individual systems pose unique challenges to ensure smooth performance. The Switch 2 is significantly more powerful than its predecessor, but it nevertheless can’t match the specs of the PS5. While Square Enix has praised the handheld, the open worlds of the second and third remakes are more demanding than Remake Intergrade.
The Xbox Series S also has memory limitations that can make cross-platform releases difficult. Having specific developers working on each platform could result in fewer compromises for gamers. At the same time, if one team falls behind schedule, that may dash hopes of a prompt release date on all systems.
