FSR 4 special version to boost gaming performance on handhelds, coming this year

FSR, or FidelityFX Super Resolution, is AMD’s upscaling technology that competes with Nvidia’s DLSS. The latest generation, FSR 4, is currently officially limited to Radeon RX 7000 and RX 9000 discrete GPUs. Now, AMD’s Senior Vice President and General Manager of the Computing and Graphics Group has reportedly confirmed that FSR 4 is coming to APUs soon.
What this means is handhelds and gaming laptops will soon officially support FSR 4 upscaling. This should allow for improved gaming performance on both platforms. Most handhelds are powered by AMD APUs, so official support for FSR 4 comes as great news for a lot of gamers. AMD’s Jack Huynh made the announcement during a meeting with Korean Media, sharing a “by the end of this year” release window (via The Elec).
To be more specific, this will be a special lightweight version of FSR 4 that targets integrated graphics. Presently available APUs such as the AMD Ryzen Z2 Extreme and Ryzen AI Halo are not capable enough to run the standard implementation of FSR 4. That said, the modding community has been able to run FSR 4 on existing handhelds, so it’s unclear what performance differences, whether better or worse, this special version will have.
Furthermore, The Elec also reports that new AMD APUs with FSR 4 support are coming this year; though it should be noted that Jack Huynh did not directly state the same. These new APUs are expected to support the full-fledged version of FSR 4.
