GTA 6: Rockstar aims to fix one of the biggest criticisms of its previous games

GTA 6 is set to offer considerably more freedom during story missions than previous Rockstar titles. The studio wants to give players more control over how they complete their objectives – addressing a long-standing criticism of its mission design.

Rockstar Games is known for its vast open worlds, where players are largely free to do whatever they want. But that freedom often comes to an abrupt end when a story mission begins. Stray from the intended route, kill an enemy too early or try an unconventional approach, and the mission can fail immediately. Fans have been criticizing this restrictive design for years. The top comment in a roughly four-year-old Reddit thread about Red Dead Redemption 2 captures the frustration:

It's the game design of Rockstar wich is a paradox. a paradox in which you get a restrictive game over in the scripted missions if you leave or don't do what Rockstar wants you to do. on the other hand you have total freedom in free roam, to become whatever you want, to do whatever you want. [...]

Rockstar wants to make missions less restrictive

Rockstar appears to be tackling this issue in GTA 6 (available for pre-order on Amazon). Speaking to IGN, Rockstar developer Rob Nelson explains that the studio has deliberately worked to give players more flexibility during missions without sacrificing the cinematic storytelling the series is known for. The interview also touches on several other gameplay improvements. As an example, Nelson points to a mission already featured in the Extended Look, where Jason and Lucia must escape from a high-rise building. Instead of being forced along a single predetermined route, players will apparently have several ways to get out.

Another example involves a mission featuring Raul. Jason initially fires from a moving car while Lucia is behind the wheel, before players take control of the vehicle themselves. The game suggests an optimal escape route, but does not force players to follow it. As long as they manage to shake off the police, they can apparently complete the mission whichever way they choose.

The idea is part of a broader effort to make story missions feel more like a natural extension of the open world. Rockstar wants car chases and robberies to operate under the same basic rules, whether they happen during a scripted mission or unfold spontaneously in free roam. That does not mean scripted sequences are going away entirely. For major story moments, Rockstar still intends to prioritize cinematic presentation, even if that means limiting player freedom at times.

Fans welcome the prospect of more freedom

Nelson's comments have been met with a largely positive response in a recent Reddit thread. Many users feel that Rockstar's previous games held players' hands too much during missions, making the prospect of a less restrictive approach particularly appealing. One reference that keeps coming up is a popular video by YouTuber NakeyJakey, who criticized Rockstar's "outdated" mission design back in 2018. The video has since amassed around 11 million views, and some Reddit users are even wondering whether the developers may have taken his criticism on board.

There is some skepticism, however. Not everyone believes GTA 6 will offer genuinely open-ended missions, with some fans expecting little more than a few alternative routes or solutions. Others argue that Rockstar's linear mission design has its merits, particularly when it comes to delivering tightly directed, cinematic sequences. Whether GTA 6 can strike a better balance between player freedom and cinematic storytelling remains to be seen. Readers are welcome to share their thoughts in the comments below.
